With a reputation for nuanced color tones and tweaks that may evoke a suffocating Buckingham Palace in “The Crown” or a ghostly time shift in “Last Night in Soho,” Asa Shoul, senior colorist at Warner Bros. De Lane Lea in London, is increasingly tough to book.
A veteran of post production on some 50 feature films, Shoul began at Framestore in 1994 as a telecine colorist before going on to score a BAFTA TV craft award for Netflix hit series “The Crown,” and has worked on Emmy-winning history miniseries “Shackleton” and “Generation Kill” for HBO.
With a body of work also including “The Constant Gardener,” “United 93,” “Ex Machina” and “Baby Driver,” it’s no surprise Shoul is one of the 14 nominees for a new EnergaCamerimage Film Festival prize, the FilmLight color awards, an honor the U.K. post company launched to highlight the critical work of the industry’s top colorists.

Kenneth Branagh has been tapped to direct the upcoming Bee Gees biopic for Paramount Pictures.
The movie will center on the life and times of the genre-spanning band, following the humble beginnings of brothers Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb into their journey to pop superstardom. Following their first No. 1 hit “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” the Bee Gees went on to write and perform hundreds of popular songs and worked on the soundtrack for the 1977 film “Saturday Night Fever.”
Ben Elton is writing the script for the still-untitled biopic.
The band was the subject of a recent HBO documentary titled “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” which was directed by Frank Marshall. Barry Gibb, the only surviving member of the band, was interviewed for the doc; Maurice died in 2003 and Robin in 2012.

Anna Marsh, the newly appointed CEO of leading European film and TV group Studiocanal, comes off as self-contained and mild-mannered, but her bullish track record at the company and relationships with big-name producers such as David Heyman (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Andrew Rona (“Non-Stop”) suggests she has an iron fist in that velvet glove.
A 12-year Studiocanal veteran, Marsh — who replaced Didier Lupfer as chief executive — knows the company inside out. She started managing international sales in her early 30s, then became executive VP of distribution and, later, managing director of the banner’s U.K. subsidiary. At 40, the sophisticated New Zealand-born, France-educated Marsh now ranks as one of Europe’s most powerful executives in the industry, and one of the continent’s few women in a top leadership position in entertainment.

David Heyman’s Heyday Films, the company behind this year’s hot Oscar contenders “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Marriage Story,” and Hardy Son & Baker (“Taboo & Christmas Carol”) are set to produce “Shackleton,” the long-gestating biopic of legendary polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.
Tom Hardy is on board to play the title role, and will also produce the pic alongside Dean Baker through their banner Hardy Son & Baker which originated the project.
“Tom and I were always fascinated by Shackleton as a leader and his contagious optimism and absolute belief in his team,” Baker told Variety. “At a time where leaders seem to be more about self than society, Shackleton sacrificed his own needs to ensure the wellbeing of his team – thats inspirational,” added Baker.
Written by “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” scribe Peter Straughan, “Shackleton” will reteam Heyday Films and Studiocanal, who most recently delivered two successful “Paddington...

As the Icelandic Film Fund is battling proposed government cuts of 40% for 2014, a group of filmmakers has signed a statement of support for the Icelandic industry.
The supporters include Clint Eastwood, Darren Aronofsky and Terrence Malick, whose films Flags of Our Fathers, Noah and Tree Of Life have all shot partially in Iceland.
As Screen previously reported, more than 200 jobs could be lost because of the proposed cuts. In its 2014 budget, the Icelandic government is proposing a 40% cut to the Icelandic Film Fund, the organisation that supports Icelandic filmmaking through screenwriting, development and production grants. This is the second time in recent years that the Icelandic government has planned to deliver such a blow to local industry — In 2010 the government had proposed a 35% cut to the fund, but eventually enacted 25%.
The second round of budget talks will be held on Dec 13 (Friday) with the final bill to be voted on next week.

We reported previously that Marvel was close to securing Patty Jenkins as the director for Thor 2, and now Deadline Shackleton has announced that Marvel has made it official. The Monster writer/director will be picking up where Kenneth Branagh left off with Chris Hemsworth as the title superhero. That means that, depending on when they start filming for their November 2013 release, Hemsworth will have worked as Thor for 3 different directors in the span on 2 years. Jenkins is an interesting choice, not only because she’ll be the first woman taking on a comic book movie of this size, but because her resume is short but sweet. Monster was a phenomenal, performance-driven drama, but she’s also directed episodes of Arrested Development and Entourage. It’s a range that’s a mile wide and an inch deep considering that it’s been nearly a decade since directing her only feature film to date. She...

New Endeavors: Branagh, Levy
Kenneth Branagh and Eugene Levy have signed with Endeavor. Branagh is filming the feature Valkyrie, in which he plays Henning Von Tresckow. He most recently directed Sleuth, starring Jude Law, which will be released this year by Sony Pictures Classics, and the HBO Films adaptation of William Shakespeare's As You Like It, which premieres Aug. 21.
His recent acting credits include the films Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Celebrity along with HBO's Warm Springs, A&E's Shackleton and HBO/BBC's Conspiracy, which won him an Emmy in 2001 for best actor in a miniseries or TV movie.
Branagh also directed The Magic Flute, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Hamlet, the latter of which earned him an Oscar nomination for adapted screenplay. He continues to be repped by manager Judy Hofflund.
Levy most recently co-starred in the film For Your Consideration, which he co-wrote with Christopher Guest. He co-wrote and co-starred in three other collaborations with Guest: A Mighty Wind, Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman.
Levy, a Second City Theater and Second City TV alum, also has appeared in such films as the American Pie franchise, Bringing Down the House, Serendipity and Father of the Bride as well as the TV series Mad About You and The Drew Carey Show. In with the new at Channel 4
LONDON -- Channel 4 is turning its back on big-budget period drama and bleak storytelling to focus instead on more upbeat humorous and contemporary shows, incoming drama head John Yorke said Wednesday. Yorke said at a conference in London that the network is abandoning its emphasis on such critically acclaimed projects as Longitude and the Kenneth Branagh starrer Shackleton and is instead looking to pick up the mood of such shows as Six Feet Under and Sex and the City. "One area I don't really want to look at anymore is period drama," Yorke said. "Things like 'Shackleton' and 'Longitude' were very good, but we need to concentrate on modern, urban and contemporary. There's also a lot of bleak stuff. I've read an above-average number of scripts that end with the central character killing themselves, their children or the rest of the family. I don't really want to sit through drama that's telling me life is terrible."...
