The sound effects used for the Pteradons are roars of tigers and mountain lions. For Freefall, the albino pteradon who bonds with David Scott, sounds of baby black bears were added, to give Freefall's character a different tone from the other pteradons.

The word Dinotopia is a portmanteau of "Dino(saurus)," which means "a terrible lizard" in Greek and "Utopia" (u+topos), in Greek, literally translating to "out of place." When combined, the title means "Out of place for a terrible lizard."
