Molly Pargeter arranges for her family to travel to a summer rental in Tuscany. During that time, she meets a variety of locals but is most fascinated by the Ketterings, who own the house. Molly's father, Haverford Downs, joins them.
Molly puts together the clues connecting Buck, Nancy and the local waterboard but her snooping draws threats from the unhappy ex-pats. Meanwhile, Haverford tests his chances with his forgetful former flame.
As the end of the holiday draws nearer, Molly realizes that the answer to her mystery is at the end of the Piero della Francesca Trail. As Molly sets off on her trip of discovery, Haverford's night of passion ends in farce.
