The Sixth Sense may have been a monster hit, but it inadvertently killed its own studio brand! Here’s how Disney’s mega-hit ended Hollywood Pictures!
Twenty-five years after its debut, much has been written about The Sixth Sense and its impact. One thing overlooked is how almost no one in Hollywood expected this supernatural thriller to make an impact. Indeed, in their annual Summer Movie Preview issue in 1999, Entertainment Weekly didn’t even mention Sense.
Sure, it had a big-name star in Bruce Willis, but it was an odd film from a completely unknown writer/director being released in August, traditionally the dumping ground for bad movies. It debuted to $26.6 million, then the highest August release. Thanks to good reviews, strong word of mouth and, of course, that now-famous twist ending, Sense became the second highest-grossing movie of 1999, $672.8 million worldwide. It earned multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and director,...

A little while back, we ran a special Wtf episode about the 1979 Disney movie, The Black Hole, an uncommonly adult film for the family-friendly studio. It kicked off an experiment for the studio to move into adult fare, eventually spawning no less than three subsidiaries that produced some of the most influential movies of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. These off-shoots paved the way for Disney’s place as the most powerful motion picture studio in the world, with them owning Lucasfilm, Pixar and the MCU. This summer, the Mouse House released an uncommonly bold MCU movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, which sported an R-rating, and has done blockbuster business. Many are wondering if perhaps this could have the way for Disney to tackle some adult fare, but it wouldn’t be the first time, and maybe now is the time to bring back Touchstone Pictures.
So, what’s Touchstone Pictures...

When the end of Yellowstone was officially announced last year, Paramount Network had set the wheels in motion for two more spinoffs. There was the prequel series, to be set in 1944, and then the present-day continuation, set to take place after the events of Yellowstone, which had the working title 2024.
Now, that sequel series is very much beginning to take shape.
That series will be titled The Madison and will star Michelle Pfeiffer, and it will be the next series to rollout in the Yellowstone universe. The Oscar-nominated movie star will also executive produce the new series from franchise boss Taylor Sheridan.
The Madison is described as a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.

The 25th anniversary of Deep Blue Sea is generally not seen as a significant cultural event. In the grand context of a world spinning wildly off its axis, finding time to remember that movie where scientists use shark brains to cure Alzheimer’s can be difficult.
Yet Deep Blue Sea deserves to be remembered. Not for the events of the film itself—though it is, remarkably, still one of the best shark movies ever made—but rather for the incredible original rap song that plays over its end credits, “Deepest Bluest (Shark’s Fin).” In that rousing ballad, rapper and Deep Blue Sea co-star LL Cool J delivers what could best be described as a shark’s diss track to the rest of the world sung from the shark’s perspective. Best remembered for the lyric, “Deepest, bluest, my hat is like a shark’s fin,” it occasionally makes the...

In the 80s and 90s, an interesting cycle of inspirational teacher movies was being made. You know the type – the film where a big star plays a down-and-out teacher who gets posted in some crime-ridden school, and they manage to turn things around? Often, they were based on true stories, like Stand and Deliver, Dangerous Minds, Lean on Me and a few others. Then, there were the more fanciful, tough-guy teacher movies, like Nick Nolte’s Teachers and James Belushi’s underrated The Principal.
But of all these movies, the most badass, by far, is a little movie called The Substitute starring Tom Berenger.
In it, he plays a mercenary who goes undercover as a substitute teacher to avenge a brutal assault on his girlfriend, a crusading teacher played by Heat’s Diane Venora. While initially only planning on staying long enough to find the teens responsible, he finds himself...

Veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer talks to us about his latest film, Young Woman And The Sea, and the long process of getting it made.
Some movies descend into the ninth circle of development hell and never return, but Young Woman And The Sea, at least, has a happy ending. Having begun life in 2015 at Paramount Pictures, the project – about real-world swimmer Gertrude Ederle and her 1926 attempt to swim the English Channel – was put into turnaround five years later.
By 2020, the production had lost its original star, Lily James, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer doggedly continued to try to get it made, eventually striking a deal with Walt Disney Pictures. There, it was originally intended as fodder for the Mouse House’s Disney+ streaming service, yet the film director Joachim Rønning came back with was so impressive that Disney executives decided to give it a limited cinema release.

Music is one of the main keys to the success of a movie, as it helps to set the tone and enhances the viewers’ experience. It can even happen that films become overshadowed by the songs written and recorded specifically for them, and people tend to forget that they were originally soundtracks that lost any association with their origins.
Here are 5 dramas surpassed in popularity by their music themes, according to Reddit.
Dangerous Minds (1995)
Michelle Pfeiffer’s underrated gem presumably comes first in this respect, as everybody knows Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio, while the movie is unfairly forgotten. In fact, the story of a teacher taking up a job in East Palo Alto, a racially segregated and economically deprived city, is worth a try, apart from its cultish main song.
Chariots of Fire (1981)
“More people know the chariots of fire song than have actually seen the movie,” fairly admits @goldbloodedinthe404.

If you’re like us here at Reel Action, you probably love martial arts movies. And if you love martial arts movies, chances are, you are a fan of Mark Dacascos. And if you’re a fan of Mark Dacascos, then you probably know the movie, Only the Strong. Only the Strong is the best Jean-Claude Van Damme movie that Van Damme never starred in. In fact, if you look at the director’s filmography, he had a successful collaboration streak with Jcvd that led to Only the Strong. However, the movie actually fares better without him, because it features a star-making turn by the unanimously perceived underrated martial arts actor Mark Dacascos. Add in the teacher-savior plot and an introduction to a unique brand of martial art and you have an incredibly fun way to spend 90 minutes. We talk Only the Strong on this entry of Reel Action.

The near-constant rotation of villains in the seven seasons of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" provided ample opportunity for guest stars, and some of these roles went to some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Sitcom star John Ritter is a killer robot in the season 2 episode "Ted," Kal Penn of "Harold & Kumar" plays the victim of a cursed beer in season 4, and "Enchanted" star Amy Adams is featured as Tara's estranged cousin in an episode of season 5. But even in that star-studded milieu, some of the most unforgettable performances in the series were given by breakout actors and indie darlings, like SAG Award-winning multihyphenate Clea DuVall.
You might have forgotten that DuVall made an appearance in "Buffy" — in fact, the actor's character didn't appear very much on-screen at all. In "Out of Sight, Out of Mind," DuVall plays Sunnydale High School student Marcie Ross, a girl who is so shy she turns invisible,...

There have been plenty of films set in the classroom over the years, from Goodbye, Mr Chips to The Dead Poets Society, not to mention female-led films such as Mona Lisa Smile or Dangerous Minds. In all the above, the teacher is the hero of the piece. In German director Ilker Çatak’s The Teachers’ Lounge, however, the teacher is far from being a hero, despite her good and honourable intentions.
The film opens with the camera following maths teacher Carla Nowak (Leonie Benesch) as she strides purposefully into school and makes her way to the teachers’ lounge before heading to class. Before the film has even got going or a line has been spoken, Çatak alerts his audience to the fact that this film is no School of Rock. Thanks to Marvin Miller’s truly disturbing score, the tone is set for a psychological thriller that will set the nerves on edge.

As an end product, “Killers of the Flower Moon” did not come swiftly for Martin Scorsese and cowriter Eric Roth.
The script for the upcoming film took a wide turn in development, changing tack to focus on members of the Osage Native American tribe.
For Lily Gladstone, her lead role in the film remained bittersweet despite the shift in direction.
“You want to have more Natives writing Native stories,” Gladstone said in an interview with Vulture. “You also want the masters to pay attention to what’s going on. American history is not history without Native history.”

Courtney B. Vance has joined the cast of Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch as Cobra Bubbles, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Disney declined to comment.
Vance joins previously announced castmembers Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani and Kahiau Machado as David Kawena. Zach Galifianakis joined the cast in February. Stitch, naturally, will be a CG confection. Dean Fleischer Camp, the filmmaker behind indie darling and best animated feature Oscar nominee Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, is directing the remake that is intended to be a major release on Disney+.
The Hawaii-centric story tells of the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who was genetically engineered to be a force of destruction. With nosy social workers and pursuing aliens banging on the door, the two bond over a shared sense of family and win the day.

Coolio‘s cause of death has been revealed more than six months after he was found dead at a friend’s house in Los Angeles.
The rapper, 59, died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.
The coroner’s report also included cardiomyopathy, asthma and phencyclidine, or Pcp, as contributors to his death.
According to the CDC, cardiomyopathy is a “collection of diverse conditions of the heart muscle” that can make its ability to pump blood more difficult.
Coolio’s spokesperson said the rapper went to the bathroom at a friend’s house. When he didn’t come out, the friend called for help. Once responders arrived, Coolio was pronounced dead.

Coolio’s 28 September 2022 death was caused by an accidental overdose of fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine, a coroner has ruled.
No cause of death was given at the time when the “Gangsta’s Paradise” rapper was found dead at a friend’s house in Los Angeles, California.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner report, which was seen by People, also reportedly listed cardiomyopathy unspecified, asthma and recent phencyclidine use as other significant conditions that contributed to his death.
Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart that makes it harder for the heart muscle to pump blood to the rest of the body.
TMZ first reported the news of the coroner’s ruling, adding that – according to family spokesperson Jarel (Jarez) Posey – Coolio’s next of kin plan to honour him through documentaries and film.

The estate of rapper Coolio announced plans to release a posthumous album later this year with singles the Grammy award-winning artist was working on before his death, according to the Associated Press.
The album titled “Long Live Coolio” is the first posthumous album release from the “Gangsta’s Paradise” hip-hop star. The first single, “Tag ‘You It,’” was released on Friday and featured California rappers Too $hort and DJ Wino.
The music video showed Coolio and Too $hort in a boxing ring as women twerked. It marks the last piece of visual content Coolio appeared in before his death from cardiac arrest on Sept. 28, 2022, at age 59.
In 1995, Coolio won a Grammy for best solo rap performance for “Gangsta’s Paradise,” which came from the “Dangerous Minds” soundtrack of the Michelle Pfeiffer film. He also performed the theme music, “Aw, Here It Goes!” for the ’90’s Nickelodeon sitcom “Kenan & Kel.

Jerry Bruckheimer has seen it all. He remembers the go-go days at Paramount Pictures in the ’80s with his coked-up partner Don Simpson, which yielded the original “Beverly Hills Cop,” “Flashdance” and “Top Gun.” Simpson had incredible story instincts — he invented the “high-concept” movie — and networked Hollywood parties while ex New York ad-man Bruckheimer kept his head screwed on straight and made sure the visually stylish movies were delivered on time and on budget.
On his own in the ’90s and early 2000s, Bruckheimer was cock of the walk at the Disney studio, churning out high-testosterone, actioners from Bruce Willis vehicle “Armageddon” and Nic Cage in “Con Air” and “National Treasure” to Will Smith in “Enemy of the State” and the Johnny Depp “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, which proved that movies could string together VFX-heavy action sequences without worrying about the vagaries of plot. Over the decades Bruckheimer...

Every few years there comes another drama that focuses on a teacher facing seemingly insurmountable odds with a group of students who are challenging to teach. Typically, these movies, such as "To Sir, with Love" starring Sidney Poitier, "Stand and Deliver" with Edward James Olmos, "Lean on Me" led by Morgan Freeman, or "Dangerous Minds" with Michelle Pfeiffer, take place in urban settings where the school is overridden with crime and drugs, resulting in students who have no respect for authority and no interest in learning. Of course, that all changes when each film's respective teacher offers up some kind of revelatory lesson that sparks the interest of the young minds who maybe just need an opportunity to leave their rough upbringing behind.
The new Sundance-selected drama "Radical," written and directed by Christopher Zalla and starring Eugenio Derbez, is one of those movies, but there's something a bit different about...

Two years ago a film premiered at Sundance and would go on to make history. Coda opened at Sundance 2021 flooring audiences around the world and over a year later it culminated its incredible run by celebrating a Best Picture win at the Academy Awards.
The feel good film won over everyone’s hearts as it followed a sweet young student who with the help of a caring teacher and a solid support system learned to break away from her family and do something great. It was a beautiful story that won over audiences and became one that Sundance will remember forever.
Radical premiered opening night in Park City’s largest theater and audiences were swept off their feet with one of the most touching, sweet films of the past few years. And much like Coda, the success is largely attributed to an amazing performance by a teacher, portrayed by Eugenio Derbez.

If there’s one thing the movies have taught us, it's that the world loves the tale of an inspirational teacher who is working against the odds. From The School Of Rock to Dead Poets Society and Dangerous Minds, they’re an almost constant part of the school curriculum - and if the kids are from a disadvantaged background of some sort or another then that gains extra points with producers. There’s a reason why formulas work and this one is marked: Caution, may make you cry.
Radical is the new kid in this class - and it comes with a Mexican twist. Christopher Zalla’s based-on-a-true–story cockle-warmer was one of this year’s Day One films at Sundance and saw the writer/director return to the festival after his Padre Nuestro (later renamed Sangre De Mi Sangre) won the Grand Jury Prize back in 2007.

Rapper Coolio died at the age of 59 on Wednesday, his manager confirmed to The New York Times. A rep did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment. The artist, who achieved massive success in the 1990s, was perhaps best known for his song "Gangsta's Paradise."
From the moment Coolio first heard producer Doug Rasheed playing around with an early version of the song in 1995, the Compton-raised rapper knew it was meant for him. He had been visiting his manager Paul Stewart's house in Hollywood to grab a check, he said on a 2016 episode of "Hot Ones," when he heard the song playing in another room. "I went to Doug, said, 'Yo! What's this?' He said, 'It's just a song we're working on.' And immediately I said, 'It's mine.' Just like that," Coolio recalled.
Stewart and Rasheed were roommates, but until he heard "Gangsta's Paradise,...

Awwwww, here it goes.
We learned yesterday of the unfortunate and untimely passing of Coolio, one of the greatest American rappers in history, a prolific record producer, and an occasional actor. He was only 59. Born Artis Leon Ivey Jr., the man called Coolio started his career in the mid-'80s, achieving massive mainstream success in the mid-to-late 1990s with his albums "It Takes a Thief," "My Soul," and the remarkable "Gangsta's Paradise."
Coolio has always felt like one of those omnipresent influences, with "Gangsta's Paradise" appearing in the film "Dangerous Minds," the endlessly catchy "Rolling With My Homies" serving as the soundtrack to one of the most memorable moments in "Clueless," and his song "Aw, Here It Goes" in the Nickelodeon hit-show "Kenan and Kel" continuing to be one of the absolute best theme songs ever written.

Goodbye to the late great Coolio, one of the Nineties’ top hitmakers, and one of the best-loved voices in West Coast hip-hop or anywhere in Nineties music. The Compton-born Mc died way too young on Wednesday night, at the age of 59. Coolio blew up in the summer of 1994 with his epochal hit “Fantastic Voyage,” a total game changer, making him an icon for his deadpan humor, wild braids, and playful beats. It was a blast of West Coast G-funk, but it was a dance-floor call to the party people, who...
