Brian McConnachie, the Emmy-winning writer with the offbeat sense of humor who worked on Sctv Network and Saturday Night Live and appeared in Caddyshack and several films for Woody Allen, has died. He was 81.
McConnachie died Friday of complications from Parkinson’s disease in Venice, Florida, Michael Gerber, editor and publisher of The American Bystander, told The Hollywood Reporter. The duo relaunched the humor magazine in 2015 after McConnachie — an original staff member at National Lampoon — originally got it going in 1981.
“Every day, on every page, he has been our North Star,” Gerber said in a statement. “From his days at National Lampoon, Brian was ‘every comedy writer’s favorite comedy writer,’ crafting an unmistakable one-of-a-kind laid-back eccentricity that inspired generations.
“He is the only person I know who wrote for the Holy Trinity of Seventies Comedy — National Lampoon, SNL and Sctv. This speaks to not only his writing talent, but...

Michael Constantine, whose long career produced an Emmy award and many memorable turns as a character actor, died Aug. 31 at his home in Reading, Pa. He was 94 and died from natural causes, his agent, Julia Buchwald, confirmed.
Constantine was best known as the fruit and Windex-obsessed father Gus Portokalos in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, an indie film that rose out of nowhere to become a smash hit. It spawned a sequel and a third version was in the planning stages, this time set in Greece.,
The original film from 2002 scored more than $360 million worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies of all-time.
But Constantine had a long career before that breakout hit. He was the school principal on the popular TV series Room 222. The role of Seymour Kaufman was a key to the show, which ran on ABC-tv from 1969 to 1974. He won an Emmy for the role in 1970.

While the body positivity movement focuses on embracing cellulite and stretch marks, Mayim Bialik says she doesn’t find it empowering.
The Big Bang Theory star applauds the women who show off and embrace their “imperfections” — Bialik names Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue model Hunter McGrady and Amy Schumer as two of them — but says it’s not for her.
“Honestly, that’s totally great for those women. I don’t have those feelings about the ‘imperfections’ of my body at all,” Bialik, 41, tells Glamour. “It’s something I spoke to Hunter about. I said, ‘I understand there are some women who love to show off their cellulite and stretch marks; I don’t feel empowered by that.’ I think that’s going to vary, and I think both things need to be Ok.”

Jason Isaacs as Dr. Volmer in A Cure for WellnessIt starts with a whispered melody. It will send frissons of familiarity, of a kind of upsetting longing for clarity. You know that song the odd English girl is singing, but you can't place it. Neither can Lockhart (Dane DeHaan, who they might have called Lockjaw, as he can barely seem to spit his words out), which is what draws him into the guts of a mystery. And it draws the film into a slithering spiral, compels us to observe an autopsy of modern horror. What half-remembered giallo fugue is Gore Verbinski spooning up for us like medicine, pinioned to our chairs like one of the zombie patients in the film’s sinister clinic? A puzzle picture, a conspiracy thriller, a kind of baroque classical nightmare, A Cure For Wellness is too sturdy, busy and sure of itself to be much of a horror film.

Get your cowboy hats ready – Brad Paisley is set to join The Voice as an advisor.
The country superstar is officially joining Team Blake this season to help mentor Blake Shelton's contestants as they navigate the competition, NBC confirms to People exclusively.
"He's really been good to me, and so the fact that I was able to get him here and and advise my team made perfect sense to me because he was actually a mentor for me," Shelton shares.
"If you know anything about country music, you know who Brad Paisley is. He's entertainer of the year. He's male vocalist of the year.

Woody Allen is coming back to television, signing a deal to create a series for Amazon Studios, where he will write and direct every episode. Amazon's press release didn't have much more info on what's for now referred to as "Untitled Woody Allen Project," save that the series will, of course, premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime in the Us, UK and Germany. “Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series,” Amazon Studios vice-president Roy Price said in a statement. “From 'Annie Hall' to 'Blue Jasmine,' Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn’t be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year.” "I don’t know how I got into this," Allen added in the statement.

Two days after winning its first two Golden Globes, Amazon Studios has returned with more big news. The streaming video on demand platform has announced a deal with Woody Allen that will bring the legendary filmmaker's first ever TV series to Amazon Instant Video.
Allen has directed 47 films in a prolific career that spans 50 years. Along the way, he has earned 24 Academy Award nominations and four wins. While he has emerged as an important (and controversial) figure in the film industry, Allen has rarely worked on projects for TV. His most significant small screen release is Don't Drink The Water, a TV movie released in 1994.
With his Amazon series, Allen will move into a serial format. Details are still scant, but we do known the Untitled Woody Allen Project will be a half-hour series written and directed by Allen. The project has been given a full season order, making it...

"Family Guy" hit Ballroom 20 on Saturday (July 26) for its annual Comic-Con panel, an event with kinda tends to ebb and flow in hype based on whether or not Seth MacFarlane is there to mock question-askers. This was a second consecutive Seth MacFarlane-free year. Last year he was working on "A Million Ways To Die In The West." This year, his absence was unexplained [on the "Family Guy" panel, but it came up at "American Dad" subsequently] and raises the possibility that Seth MacFarlane has just become too big for making fun of questioners at Comic-Con. Fortunately, in lieu of Seth MacFarlane, the "Family Guy" team arrived with a longer clip reel for the season's hour-long "The Simpsons Guy" crossover event, which will air on September 28. At TCA press tour last week we got a very brief sizzle reel that included jokes about the Springfield location ("I can't imagine we're allowed to...

Prolific film-maker in line for prestigious award for contribution to cinema says making films isn't difficult, but making good ones is
Woody Allen once opined that the key to success was turning up, but it is not clear he will take his own advice at next year's Golden Globes, where he will be awarded the prestigious Cecil B DeMille award for contribution to cinema, it was announced on Sunday.
Allen has previously shunned the red carpet, leaving Nicole Kidman to accept a Golden Globe for best original screenplay for his Parisian time-travel comedy Midnight In Paris last year. But the prolific film-maker –with his latest comedy-drama Blue Jasmine starring Cate Blanchett as a pill-popping socialite - has admitted that while making films isn't difficult, making good ones can be.
"I don't work hard compared to a taxi driver or a teacher or a policeman. People think making a film every year is overwhelming.

Gulf Shores, Alabama — Not long after the Dave Matthews Band had finished their cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" on Sunday night, and only minutes after the final flare of fireworks had faded out over the Gulf of Mexico, the crew who held the Hangout Festival together for three long days was already in the process of tearing the whole thing down.
Fences were disassembled and carted off by forklift, massive stage-spanning banners were folded by weary stagehands, and crews of volunteers walked arm-in-arm along the stretch of white-sand beach picking up empties and stray cigarette butts. On paper, the 2011 Women's Soccer World Cup finals in Frankfurt, Germany seems like a clash of dueling emotions: The U.S. feels it’s a team of destiny in search of redemption. In 2007, they were knocked out of the World Cup play prematurely by Brazil, the very team they beat last Sunday to advance after Abby Wambach's amazing header tied the game with seconds remaining. The U.S. beat Brazil on penalty kicks, defeated France 3-1 Wednesday, and on Sunday find themselves on the precipice of taking home their first cup in 12 years. "I am the most honored person...

What's better than one singing cowboy?
Yep. Two of them.
"The Voice" coach Blake Shelton jumped up out of his super-special "Voice" coach chair to join buddy Brad Paisley on stage for their song, "Don't Drink the Water," on Tuesday's final performance episode of the show's first season.
Paisley started the performance off solo, but after the first chorus, he was joined by Shelton... who had suddenly found a microphone hanging out by his chair.
Shelton hopped on stage where he happily sang his part and even played a little air guitar before critiquing Paisley's six-string skills.
The song, from Paisley's latest record, was Shelton's second performance of the evening. Earlier, he took the stage to perform with his team member Dia Frampton. They sang Tom Petty's "Won't Back Down" to rave reviews.

The year was 1998. I was 16 years old, and though my music taste erred more on the side of punk and metal, there were a series of holes that allowed for the jam universe to sneak in. I was still a few months away from being eyeball-deep in Phish bootlegs, but I had already embraced the Dick's Picks series of Grateful Dead live tapes, and I had also become an enthusiastic follower of Dave Matthews Band. I had never thought much of the songs Dmb managed to get on the radio (they seemed like a slightly funkier Hootie and the Blowfish to me at the time), but a friend had put me on to their already-vast well of live shows, which allowed for a lot of exploration and fusion jams.

Woody Allen's newest feature You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger opens today in movie theaters. It's currently confusing me with its Curse of The Jade Scorpion or The Purple Rose of Cairo -like silhouette poster. With this move the marketing department has made me recall both the worst and the best from Woody Allen's filmography simultaneously. It's very schizo... maybe this means the new feature will be right smack dab in the middle, neither essential nor embarrassing?
American Poster (left), a European treatment (right)
Why couldn't they have gone with the European poster treatment? European posters are always better. It's a law of Hollywood's nature.
To celebrate its release -- I haven't had time to see it yet -- I wanted to revamp an old list I started years ago. When Vicky Cristina Barcelona was cast in 2007, numerous media outlets were making ridiculously inaccurate claims about Scarlett Johansson...

Manchester, Tennessee — There was mud, rain, oppressive heat, a set by a world-beating rap superstar (Jay-z), a classic soul icon (Stevie Wonder), a former "Tonight Show" host (Conan O'Brien) and a jam-band legend (Dave Matthews Band). In other words, just another action-packed weekend at the ninth-annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.
From Thursday through Sunday, more than 75,000 fans tried to escape triple-digit temperatures by tuning in to ferocious sets from Jay, a midnight mindfunk from the Flaming Lips, anthemic rock from kind-of hometown boys Kings of Leon and just about every flavor in between.
Thursday night eased travelers in with a main stage set from British trio the xx, whose trippy lighting and haunting, minimalist tunes soothed some nerves of attendees who might have sat in eight to 10 hours of traffic to...

Character actor and comedian who specialised in Jewish roles
Portly, balding, twinkly-eyed and sporting a moustache, Lou Jacobi, who has died aged 95, believed that he "had the look of everybody's favourite Uncle Max". Although Jacobi had been acting since he was 12, he was the sort of character actor that one could never imagine being young. He was born in the Jewish section of Toronto, Canada, and started performing as a child in the Yiddish theatre in a play called The Rabbi and the Priest, in which he was a violin prodigy. He went on to specialise in Jewish roles, both comic and dramatic, lending them that particular intonation and body language of which he was a master.
In the 1940s, Jacobi worked as a stand- up comic at holiday resorts in Muskoka, north of Toronto, a vacation spot popular with Jewish holidaymakers. He was also cast in Spring Thaw (1949), which...
