Oscar-winning Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar has made a name for himself with a series of brightly colored, delightfully kinky and unabashedly melodramatic titles, mixing comedy, drama, sex and violence to great success. He shows no signs of slowing down, with his latest outing in 2019 being the Oscar-nominated “Pain and Glory.” Let’s take a look back at all 22 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1949 in Spain, Almodovar came to prominence during La Movida Madrilena, a cultural renaissance that blossomed at the end of Francoist Spain. Staring with his filmmaking debut “Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls Like Mom” (1980), the openly gay director showed an affinity for oddballs and outsiders, populating his films with transvestites, transexuals and homosexuals, all of whom had previously been relegated to the closet. He also showed a talent for working with women, and throughout his 40 year career has placed actresses such as Penelope Cruz,...

The esteemed Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto was back in the news over the summer, when the New York Times reported that he was so irked by the song selection at a favorite Manhattan restaurant, he politely wrote to the chef and offered to take charge of the playlist. Something about the story felt typically Sakamoto: the confidence, the sensitivity, the unswerving belief that music demands to be taken a little more seriously.
The 66-year-old is being honored as Asian Filmmaker of the Year at Busan, in recognition of a soundtrack oeuvre stretching back to Nagisa Oshima’s “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” in 1983. He’s the first composer to receive the prize, and it’s hard to argue with the choice. Other Asian film composers may have amassed larger bodies of work, but few can rival Sakamoto’s international clout, cultivated over a career that’s embraced pop stardom, avant-garde experimentation and political activism.

Enduringly brilliant music composer Ryuichi Sakamoto has been named Asian Filmmaker of the year by the Busan International Film Festival. He won an Oscar for best original score for Bernardo Bertolucci‘s “The Last Emperor” in 1986.
He will receive his prize in October during the Busan festival’s opening ceremony. He will also perform and provide the score.
The festival hailed Sakamoto for his “sheer amount of time, effort, and passion.” It described him as “deeply admired and loved by the public as an artist who remains a prominent musician in the history of world cinema.”
Over a career spanning 40 years, Sakamoto has ranged from pioneering electronic music through to rock, opera and classical genres. His first music for film was for Nagisa Oshima’s “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” in 1983. He picked up Golden Globe and BAFTA awards for “The Sheltering Sky” in 1990 and repeated the feat for “Little Buddha...

A Pistol For Ringo & The Return Of Ringo: Two Films by Duccio Tessari will be available on Blu-ray April 24th From Arrow Video
The original Ringo films introduced another iconic hero to the spaghetti western; a clean-cut sharp shooter who was markedly different to Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name.
In A Pistol For Ringo, the eponymous hero, played by Giuliano Gemma (Day of Anger, Tenebrae), infiltrates a ranch of Mexican bandits to save a beautiful hostage (Nieves Navarro, Death Walks on High Heels). In The Return Of Ringo, the gunslinger, now a veteran of war, disguises himself as a Mexican in order to take revenge on outlaws who have stolen his property and taken his wife.
Hugely successful upon their original release, thanks in part to the skilled direction of Duccio Tessari (The Bloodstained Butterfly, Death Occurred Last Night), the Ringo films proved influential on the Italian western,...

Jessica Simpson is paying tribute to a country icon (and a former co-star) with her amazing Halloween ensemble.
Simpson and her husband, Eric Johnson, went all out for their country-inspired couples costume this year. The singer dressed up as Willie Nelson, while her hubby went as Nelson's long-time collaborator Waylon Jennings.
For her costume, Simpson tied her long blonde locks into a pair of braided ponytails and glued a grey beard on her face. She sold the look with an American flag headband, paisley shirt and cowboy boots.
However, Simpson couldn't pass up a chance at showing off her legs, so her version of Nelson is wearing a pair of super-short daisy dukes.
Photos: Spooktacular Halloween Costumes of 2017
The costuming choice might actually be a reference to her role as Daisy Duke in the 2005 big screen remake of The Dukes of Hazzard, in which she starred opposite Nelson, who played her uncle.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Always Shine (Sophia Takal)
With the excess of low-budget, retreat-in-the-woods dramas often finding characters hashing out their insecurities through a meta-narrative, a certain initial resistance can occur when presented with such a derivative scenario at virtually every film festival. While Sophia Takal‘s psychological drama Always Shine ultimately stumbles, the chemistry of its leads and a sense of foreboding dread in its formal execution ensures its heightened view of...

Above: Spanish poster for Pepi, Luci, Bom (Pedro Almodóvar, Spain, 1980). Artist: Ceesepe. Is there a contemporary filmmaker with a more vivid graphic sensibility than Pedro Almodóvar? His always distinctive films, with their bold colors, deliberate blocking and impeccable set design, often look like cartoons or magazine spreads come to life. Following suit, the posters for his films have always been a testament to his aesthetic, whether in his scrappy underground days or his far more polished later years. With his 20th feature film, Julieta, opening December 21, and a Museum of Modern Art retrospective beginning in New York next Tuesday, I thought it was high time I featured the best artwork of Almodóvar’s 40 year career.Any cinephile in their twenties might be forgiven for thinking that Almodóvar is the most establishment of arthouse directors: perennially fêted by Cannes and the New York Film Festival, winner of two Oscars, and, since the late 1990s,...

Back in 1990, Pedro Almodóvar was coming off a string of critical and commercial darlings thanks to “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” and “Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!,” two female-charged stories with distinct comedic voices. Producer Scott Rudin, meanwhile, was shepherding Paul Rudnick’s script about a singing nun into production, changing drafts numerous times and trying and failing to land Bette Midler as a star. Shockingly, Rudin almost landed Almodóvar as the director of “Sister Act,” but the director’s own self-doubt and skepticism of Hollywood turned him away.

Only Queen Bey can pull of this courtside style statement.
On Tuesday, basketball fans started tweeting out pics of Beyonce and Jay Z at the NBA's opening night game at Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, where the San Antonio Spurs beat the Golden State Warriors, 129-100.

While the 46-year-old rapper was dressed in a casual-yet-dapper all-black outfit, Bey came to slay. The "Formation" singer sported huge gold earrings and a black hat that she paired with a camouflage jacket from her Ivy Park athleisure line. However, it was her sparkly green Vetements sock boots that really stood out. The footwear, priced at $2, 230, is made from "sparkly logo-branded athletic socks" and include "a saucy unicorn-printed column heel," Nordstrom's website -- which also sells Ivy Park -- points out.

JoJo is free from the clutches of her old record label, and that means she’s finally able to talk about what she has wanted to talk about all along: new music.
After leaving her previous label, Blackground Records, in 2014, the singer says she called up her mom and cried. “I called my mom and we cried,” JoJo tells Billboard. “I felt relief from the literal release. And then I had a bottle of champagne with my girlfriends!”
The pop singer is ready to unveil her new album, Mad Love, on October 14th via Atlantic Records, which comes nearly ten years to the date of her last full-length, The High Road. Released thus far is the lead single, “F– Apologies,” featuring rapper Wiz Khalifa, and it has already reached the Top 40 of Billboard’s Pop Songs chart.

Giallo is the Italian mystery/horror genre that was most prominent in the 1970’s. It takes its name from the term for the mystery novels being published in Italy around the same time. These novels had yellow covers (Giallo is Italian for “Yellow.”) The films eventually gained a reputation for gratuitous violence and sexuality and their murder scenes served as a big influence on the American Slasher film. The genre has its greats, as well as its fair share of duds. If you’re unfamiliar with Giallo, Death Walks On High Heels, from 1971, is an excellent introduction.

Welcome back to This Week In Discs where we check out tomorrow’s new releases today! Death Walks Twice: Two Films By Luciano Ercoli What is it? An exotic dancer learns her thief of a father has been murdered and she’s next on the killer’s list in Death on High Heels. A model witnesses a brutal murder while under the influence of a hallucinatory drug in Death Walks at Midnight. Why buy it? Ercoli’s twin entries feature Nieves Navarro in the lead roles and both surround her with style, a little bit of goofiness, and a black-gloved killer. Both films also serve as visible inspirations for American directors like Brian De Palma as they mix sex, death, and twists of identity into fun, colorful genre romps. Giallo fans will want to jump all over this one as these two Italian thrillers come to Blu-ray in beautiful HD and loaded with special features. Admittedly...

From the amount of Italian horror films I’ve reviewed, I think it is obvious that I love them… Luckily Arrow Video have been feeding my need for these movies well, and with Death Walks Twice they have given me a double dose of pleasure, as this set features two films from Luciano Ercoli: Death in High Heels and Death Walks at Midnight – two films that may be a little dated, but to giallo fans like myself, I doubt this will be an issue.
Death Walks in High Heels features Nieves Navarro as Nicole an exotic dancer. The daughter of a murdered jewel thief she finds herself stalked by a man in black hunting for the stolen gems. Fleeing from Paris, can she escape from her assailant? In Death Walks at Midnight, Navarro returns, this time playing a model who takes part in a drug fuelled photo shoot. While...

In a week from now, Ki & Ka would be hitting the screens. While all seems hunky dory for now, what with the duo dancing to the tune of ‘High Heels’ and also exchanging some banter as the couple on screen, one wonders if Balki has kept the entire narrative of the film fun and frothy, or is there going to be some tension in the air as well for them?

R. Balki’s movies aren’t usually known for their music, as Cheeni Kum and Paa had one gem of a song, but Ki & Ka is the exception because it’s quite a funky album. The trailers gave us a snippet of ‘High Heels’ and ‘Most Wanted Munda’ that completely suited the quirky romance which gives a new spin on gender dynamics. Instead, he’s recruited the Meet Bros, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Mithoon, and Ilayaraja for this patchy but fun album.
If you’re thinking you’ve heard High Heels before, you probably have with Jaz Dhami and Yo Yo Honey Singh’s original song that came out in 2012.
