Pedro Almodóvar is the next recipient of Film at Lincoln Center’s prestigious Chaplin Award.

The Oscar-winning writer-director will be celebrated at a gala event featuring excerpts of his work and appearances by co-stars, friends and colleagues at Lincoln Center on April 28, 2025.

The announcement was made ahead of the U.S. premiere and New York Film Festival centerpiece gala screening of Almodóvar’s first English-language feature film The Room Next Door, starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton.

The Room Next Door won the Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival and is set to open in L.A. and New York on Dec. 20 before expanding to select cities on Dec. 25 and going nationwide in January.

The esteemed Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto was back in the news over the summer, when the New York Times reported that he was so irked by the song selection at a favorite Manhattan restaurant, he politely wrote to the chef and offered to take charge of the playlist. Something about the story felt typically Sakamoto: the confidence, the sensitivity, the unswerving belief that music demands to be taken a little more seriously.

The 66-year-old is being honored as Asian Filmmaker of the Year at Busan, in recognition of a soundtrack oeuvre stretching back to Nagisa Oshima’s “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” in 1983. He’s the first composer to receive the prize, and it’s hard to argue with the choice. Other Asian film composers may have amassed larger bodies of work, but few can rival Sakamoto’s international clout, cultivated over a career that’s embraced pop stardom, avant-garde experimentation and political activism.

Enduringly brilliant music composer Ryuichi Sakamoto has been named Asian Filmmaker of the year by the Busan International Film Festival. He won an Oscar for best original score for Bernardo Bertolucci‘s “The Last Emperor” in 1986.

He will receive his prize in October during the Busan festival’s opening ceremony. He will also perform and provide the score.

The festival hailed Sakamoto for his “sheer amount of time, effort, and passion.” It described him as “deeply admired and loved by the public as an artist who remains a prominent musician in the history of world cinema.”

This female centered film looks at Julieta, in her older and younger days, as she navigates through her story as a brokenhearted woman who faces the painful mystery of her long alienation from her daughter.

Tie Me Down!,” two female-charged stories with distinct comedic voices. The 43rd annual Film Festival Ghent (Oct 11-21) awarded Terence Davies’ A Quiet Passion with the Grand Prix for Best Film.

Shot largely at Aed Studios in Antwerp, the Emily Dickinson biopic is a UK-Belgium co-production.

The international jury was led by Jeremy Thomas. The veteran UK producer was also recognised by the festival for his contribution to cinema, receiving the lifetime achievement award.

Ahead of the closing-night screening of Belgian film-maker Bavo Defurne’s romantic drama Souvenir, Thomas and his jury – including Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung, author Jonathan Coe and actresses Maaike Neuville, Lina El Arabi and India Hair – handed out the prizes.

Davies’ A Quiet Passion win came with $47.500 (€43,500) in prize money; special mention went to Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov’s Glory.

Sony Pictures Classics has picked up North America, Benelux, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Asia excluding South Korea to Richard Gere starrer Norman: The Moderate Rise And Tragic Fall Of A New York Fixer.

Separately, the company said on Monday it had acquired the rest of the Pedro Almodovar library and has dated the Spanish master’s upcoming Julieta for December 21.

Joseph Cedar wrote and directed Norman: The Moderate Rise And Tragic Fall Of A New York Fixer, which was previously known as Oppenheimer Strategies and marks his follow-up to Footnote, the Oscar nominee that Spc also distributed.

Charlotte Gainsbourg, Josh Charles, Michael Sheen, Lior Ashkenazi, Dan Stevens, Steve Buscemi and Hank Azaria star in the drama about a small-time fixer who gets in over his head in Middle East politics.

Gideon Tadmor and Cold Iron Pictures financed the project in association with The Rabinovich Foundation, The Jerusalem Film Fund and Keshet International.

The new acquisitions include “Pepi, Luci, Bom;” “Labyrinth of Passion;” “Dark Habits;” “What Have I Done to Deserve This?;” “High Heels” and “Kika.” The full library also includes “Matador,” “Law of Desire,” “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” “The Flower of My Secret,” “Live Flesh,” “All About My Mother,” “Talk to Her,” “Bad Education,” “Volver,” “Broken Embraces,” “I’m So Excited!” and “The Skin I Live In.” “Julieta” premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

Giallo is the Italian mystery/horror genre that was most prominent in the 1970’s. It takes its name from the term for the mystery novels being published in Italy around the same time. These novels had yellow covers (Giallo is Italian for “Yellow.”) The films eventually gained a reputation for gratuitous violence and sexuality and their murder scenes served as a big influence on the American Slasher film. The genre has its greats, as well as its fair share of duds. If you’re unfamiliar with Giallo, Death Walks On High Heels, from 1971, is an excellent introduction.

From the amount of Italian horror films I’ve reviewed, I think it is obvious that I love them… Luckily Arrow Video have been feeding my need for these movies well, and with Death Walks Twice they have given me a double dose of pleasure, as this set features two films from Luciano Ercoli: Death in High Heels and Death Walks at Midnight – two films that may be a little dated, but to giallo fans like myself, I doubt this will be an issue.

Lorenzo Vigas’ Venice Golden Lion winner From Afar and César Augusto Acevedo’s Cannes Critics Week France 4 Visionary Award winner Land And Shade will screen at the International Film Festival of Panama.

Both selections will play in the Ibero American Showcase under the auspices of Iff Panama 2016, which runs from April 7-13.

Exclusive: Beijing-based Le Vision Pictures is to unveil Daniel Lee’s action suspense title The Lost Tomb and Guo Jingming’s fantasy epic L.O.R.D. at Hong Kong’s Filmart.

Based on a popular web novel, The Lost Tomb stars Jing Boran (Monster Hunt), Lu Han, Ma Sichun and Wang Jingchun in a story about an uncle and nephew exploring ancient tombs. The feature is in post-production.

Guo’s L.O.R.D. (Legend Of Ravaging Dynasties) stars Fan Bingbing, Wu Yifan, William Chan and several actors from Guo’s best-selling Tiny Times franchise, including Yang Mi, Cheney Chen and Amber Kuo. R. Balki’s movies aren’t usually known for their music, as Cheeni Kum and Paa had one gem of a song, but Ki & Ka is the exception because it’s quite a funky album. The trailers gave us a snippet of ‘High Heels’ and ‘Most Wanted Munda’ that completely suited the quirky romance which gives a new spin on gender dynamics. Instead, he’s recruited the Meet Bros, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Mithoon, and Ilayaraja for this patchy but fun album.
