There are two ways of looking at Clint Eastwood's 1980s. One is to view them as an enshrinement. Eastwood turned 50 at the outset of the decade, and the movies were either mainstream-skewing victory laps or thoughtful departures; the star wasn't above coasting, but he made sure to carve out some time for personal projects about subjects that fascinated him (e.g. the country music drama "Honkytonk Man" and the Charlie Parker biopic "Bird"). Basically, Eastwood could do whatever he wanted at his home studio at Warner Bros., and sometimes he wanted to make "Pink Cadillac."
You can also view Eastwood's '80s as a waste of his time and talent. Of the 11 films he made over that 10-year span, only one was great ("Tightrope"), a few were above-average, and the rest were either misfires or outright garbage. Some argue that he needed the behind-the-camera reps to make his '90s and '00s triumphs,...

Movie stars are still very much a factor in Hollywood, but they seem a little less special in our social media age. Even those that don't have active accounts on Instagram, TikTok, Bluesky, and the like seem a little more human now that anyone can whip out their smartphone and record, say, Timothée Chalamet popping into a coffee shop for an espresso. We just don't get awestruck by stars the way we used to.
Those of us born before the proliferation of the internet remember a time when stars felt larger than life. Warren Beatty, Barbra Streisand, and Burt Reynolds were like American royalty. When you went to the movies and saw them in a trailer for a new motion picture, you knew you'd be right back in that theater (or one close by) to see that sucker in a few months. And if you were promised two big stars for the price of one,...

The term "icon" is grossly overused when discussing artists and celebrities, but it applies to Clint Eastwood. Between his pivotal role in the popularization of the Spaghetti Western and his revolutionizing of the crime film with his five-film portrayal of "Dirty" Harry Callahan, you could say there wasn't a more important actor throughout the second half of the 20th century and no one who knows the terrain would take issue with your assessment. Eastwood wasn't just an international movie star, he was, for good and ill, an avatar for law and order in America. He played violent men who uncomfortably lived by simple codes. His characters typically "won," but they paid a sometimes terrible price for triumphing. They compromised their values. They placed loved ones in harm's way. They punished themselves for punishing others (or just behaving like a lout). And once upon a time, audiences were in the market...

If you're a fan of Clint Eastwood the filmmaker, and how can you not be, it's been a rough stretch. Your mileage may vary, but I don't think he's made a truly great movie since the wildly underrated (and underseen) "Letters from Iwo Jima." I've warmed to "Gran Torino" over the years, but after that the movies –- even the mostly good ones –- have been marked by indifferent craftsmanship (who can forget Bradley Cooper making the fake baby's arm move in what was supposed to be one of the most emotionally charged scenes in "American Sniper").
We know Eastwood is renowned for delivering movies ahead of schedule and under budget, so it was hard not to conclude that his drive to keep working, to keep moving, to keep from doing nothing as he passed into his nineties (he's currently 94) was more important to him than making a finely wrought film.

It is borderline impossible to define the six-decade-long artistic legacy that Clint Eastwood had painstakingly mapped, as his stacked filmography includes everything from certified classics to overlooked gems. Of course, no artist can have an impeccably perfect run, but some, like Eastwood, inch very close to that ideal by re-defining entire genres that will always have a place in cinematic history. Not every good film that Eastwood helmed or starred in made a ton of money at the box office, but artistic success cannot be solely measured via such narrow metrics, as his name is embedded into the public consciousness, for better or worse.
It is tempting to dissect Eastwood's artistry purely through the Western genre — works like "A Fistful of Dollars" or "The Outlaw Josey Wales" capture his contributions succinctly — but there is much more to him than a drawling accent or laidback gunslinging. The actor has often been...

"Star Trek: Voyager" was a big deal for Paramount back in 1995. It was the first new "Star Trek" show to launch after the conclusion of the powerhouse "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in 1994, leaving it and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" -- the "new kids" on the block -- to fend for themselves. What's more, the premiere of "Voyager" also launched Paramount's new TV network, Upn, a massively ambitious media venture that, it was hoped, would provide legitimate competition for the other major TV players of the era. Upn ended up crashing and burning after a decade, but "Voyager" eventually found a respectably sized audience. This was, however, after several years of struggling, and several instances of recasting.
Most notably, "Star Trek: Voyager" had trouble finding a captain. The show's central character was to be named Captain Elizabeth Janeway, and she was notably to be the first woman to serve...

In the tradition of “The Naked Gun”, the 1950’s detective crime drama series “Tightrope!" will be ‘re-imagined’ as a slapstick comedy series for The Roku Channel, fronted by Emmy winner Ty Burrell and executive produced by “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston for his Moonshot Entertainment:
“…through reimagined dialogue and a new lead actor in Ty Burrell, ‘Tightrope!’ reshapes the drama of the vintage 1950’s series into a slapstick comedy, where Burrell plays a lone wolf detective following cases city to city, while he searches for his long-lost love who got away…”

Cranston’s Moonshot previously produced “Your Honor” (Showtime), “Sneaky Pete” (Amazon), “Dangerous Book for Boys” (Amazon), “Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams” (Amazon...

Ty Burrell and Bryan Cranston are set to walk a Tightrope! for the Roku Channel.
The two Emmy winners are teaming up for a comedic reworking of a short-lived detective drama from the late 1950s (exclamation point very much included). Burrell will star in and executive produce the six-episode series, while Cranston is an executive producer.
Roku made the announcement Tuesday at its newfronts presentation to advertisers, where it also showcased upcoming programming including a travel series from Tracee Ellis Ross, culinary competition Best Bite Wins hosted by Josh Peck and a talk show from John Cena, among others.
Tightrope! aired for one season in 1959-60 on CBS. The drama starred Mike Connors as an undercover police officer who infiltrated various criminal organizations. When Janelle Monáe released "Make Me Feel," the funky hit single off her third studio album, "Dirty Computer," in February 2018, the song consumed my thoughts. I was 19 at the time, and the year had been a significant one for me - I had been dealing with my parents' divorce, started rehashing religious trauma, and shaved all my hair off. And on top of all that, I began to question my sexuality.
But Monáe's catchy lyrics - "That's just the way you make me feel" - kept echoing in my head. The song itself was immediately praised as a bisexual anthem, and Monáe's music video with Tessa Thompson portrayed an irresistible flirtationship between the two.

Michelle Williams harbors a deep desire to lace up her dancing shoes again.
The actress is best known for her intense performances in searing dramas like “Blue Valentine” and “Manchester by the Sea,” but she particularly loved her change-of-pace work in the ebullient musical “The Greatest Showman.”
“I would make another one of those in a heartbeat,” Williams told Variety during an interview for a recent cover story. “I wish they’d make a sequel.”
“The Greatest Showman” became a theatrical blockbuster when it opened in 2017, grossing 434.9 million globally thanks in part to its mega-selling album. It was a soundtrack filled with infectious anthems such as “This Is Me,” “The Greatest Show” and “Rewrite the Stars.” Williams, who played the wife of Hugh Jackman’s P.T. Barnum in the heavily fictionalized look at the circus baron, sang such songs as “Tightrope” and “A Million Dreams.” And she wasn’t immune to the album’s ubiquity.

And as you might guess, he’s pretty sure nobody is: “My brain lives with the cannabis/Can I resist the dark abyss?” he offers on “Calamity,” a silly spoken-word poem in which the ex-One Direction member turned solo hitmaker sounds like a teenage stoner.
Malik has a point. It’s been more than two years since his last album, Icarus Falls, an aptly titled 27-track follow-up to his much sleeker 2016 debut,...

Why’s it gotta feel like I'm walking a tightrope
Why you wanna see how far I fall

And I ain't ever fell from a love this tall
Are you ready ‘cause I’m ready to let go
Never though that I’d be ready again
Guessing it’s somethin' ‘bout the neon red glow
Got me thinking about giving on in
Something told me it was you
Something told me it was you
Something told me it was you
Something told me it was you
Sitting with my legs across your torso
We are who we are when we’re alone

Samantha Ware was 23-years-old when she first stepped onto the set of “Glee.” A few years prior, she chose to leave college, where she was studying to become a music teacher with a minor in journalism, to audition for “The Lion King.” She booked the role of Nala in the Las Vegas stage production, then landed a starring role in “The Book of Mormon” on Broadway, followed by the Chicago production of “Hamilton.”
When she left New York for her first-ever TV gig on “Glee” in 2015, Ware – a longtime fan of the show – was ecstatic to join the hit series in its final year, as one of the “new kids” in Season 6.
After she had completed filming her first musical number, “Tightrope” by Janelle Monáe, for her first episode in the series, Ware says she felt sidelined by the show’s lead, Lea Michele.

Lennie Niehaus, who went from Stan Kenton sideman to Clint Eastwood’s movie composer during a nearly 60-year career in music, died Thursday at his daughter’s home in Redlands, Calif. He was 90.
Niehaus’s two dozen films for Eastwood include original scores for the best picture-winning Western “Unforgiven,” the Charlie Parker biopic “Bird” and the popular romantic drama “The Bridges of Madison County.”
The two met in 1953 at California’s Fort Ord, when the two were in the Army during the Korean Conflict. “I used to play jazz jobs at one of the beer clubs on the base, and Clint was tending bar,” Niehaus wrote in an essay about the actor-director for his 1996 American Film Institute Life Achievement Award. “I used to go off post and play in a little jazz club in nearby Santa Cruz on Sunday afternoons, and he would be there.”

Cinematographer Jack N. Green is proof that nice guys sometimes finish first — even in Hollywood.
Born in 1939, the San Francisco native traveled a long-rising arc in his career, which includes distinguished stints shooting aerial sequences for documentaries and some of the most iconic films of the 1960s, eventually becoming director of photography on a run of Clint Eastwood movies and more recent comedies such as “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Hot Tub Time Machine” and two “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” movies.
Green’s parents, Trudy and John Sr., had a shared fascination for photography and rigged up a home darkroom that made a strong artistic impact on their son.
Graduating from high school and barber college at 17, Green planned to make that job his career. But all that changed when he was befriended by shop regular Joe Dieves, a former World War II combat cameraman. Enamored of Dieves’ stories, Green soon joined him,...

In the new Disney musical extravaganza Mary Poppins Returns, years have passed since the world’s original supernanny brought serenity and some much-needed sugar to 17 Cherry Tree Lane. Now, sadly, the Banks household is once again at sixes, sevens and possibly eights.
The grown-up Michael (Ben Whishaw), a widower with children, weeps and wrings his hands—he’s fallen perilously behind on the mortgage. You’d think the poor man might sustain himself by recalling the adventures of his boyhood (hopping in and out of chalk drawings and all that), but he treats those idyllic days as troubled, barely suppressed memories of irrational exuberance.

Will coach Adam Levine be able to overcome the public hatred towards him after last week’s results show for “The Voice”? Many felt he threw his team member DeAndre Nico under the bus to save his sick artist Reagan Strange with crazy comments killing his chances. Interviewing Charlie Saldana in the quiet of his North Hollywood home, the 79-year-old working key grip still exudes the cool confidence of someone who’s spent a lifetime in partnership with one of Hollywood’s great directors: Clint Eastwood.
Saldana still possesses an actor’s looks, with a salt-white mustache and a full silver mane. He began his career building scaffolding for Disney’s “Pollyanna” in 1960, following military service in the 101st Airborne Division. Joining the grip union, he was employed by Hollywood’s blossoming TV industry on “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “Gomer Pyle, Usmc” “Hogan’s Heroes” and “The Mod Squad.” The neophyte grip learned his craft well.
Born in 1939 to Charles and Josephine Saldana, Charlie was raised with a strong work ethic that drove his rise in the industry. “Gaining grip skill was a layered, educative process,” he says.

Janelle Monae released one of 2018’s most buzzed-about albums this spring with Dirty Computer, and now she’s taking a victory lap through Austin City Limits. In early October, between her performances at the Austin City Limits music festival, she taped an hour-long set for the long-running PBS television series. The full episode will air this weekend on November 17th — and you can watch her joyous performance of album highlight “Pynk” right now.
Monae rules the stage in a Dirty Computer sweatshirt, a militant-chic beret and her signature pink pantaloons from the “Pynk” music video.

Janelle Monae rose to fame as a recording artist before she tried her hand at acting, and that worked out pretty well for her: in 2016 her first two live-action film roles were in one Best Picture Oscar nominee (“Hidden Figures“) and the Best Picture Oscar winner (“Moonlight“). Now she’s back on the music scene with her third album, “Dirty Computer,” which was released on April 27. Will she win Grammys for it? Given how much time she has spent on the movie-awards circuit lately, it may be surprising that she’s never actually been rewarded by the recording academy.
Monae received her first of six Grammy nominations in 2009: Best Urban/Alternative Performance for the song “Many Moons” from her 2007 Ep “Metropolis: Suite I.” Then in 2010 she released her debut full-length album “The ArchAndroid” and was nominated twice more in 2011: Best Contemporary R&B Album and Best Urban/Alternative Performance for the song “Tightrope.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In honor of this week’s “The 15:17 to Paris,” what is Clint Eastwood’s greatest film (either as an actor, or as a director)?
Richard Brody (@tnyfrontrow), The New Yorker
Almost impossible to choose, but something especially energized and deep-rooted results when a great filmmaker makes a movie about the practice of filmmaking, and something even more energized about Eastwood’s own incarnation of a John Huston-oidal director, as a vain blowhard and a squanderer, in “White Hunter Black Heart”; it’s the movie of a Hollywood filmmaker thinking equivocally about his industry and his confrontation with its ingrained practices and legends. Happy Birthday to one of We Are Movie Geeks favorite stars. Clint Eastwood was born on this day in 1930, making him 86 years old. The actor and two-time Oscar winning director hasn’t let his age slow him down a bit. Sully, his new movie as a director, opens in September.
We posted a list in 2011 of his ten best directorial efforts Here
Clint Eastwood has appeared in 68 films in his six (!) decades as an actor, and here, according to We Are Movie Geeks, are his ten best:
Honorable Mention: Honkytonk Man
By the 1980s, Clint Eastwood was one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. With his own production company, directorial skills, and economic clout, Eastwood was able to make smaller, more personal films. A perfect example is the underrated Honkytonk Man, which also happens to be one of Eastwood’s finest performances.

Later this month, my father will be in La, and Toshi is already asking me what movie he's going to get to watch with Grandaddy this time. As we covered in an earlier Film Nerd 2.0, my dad shared some John Wayne films with Toshi and Allen during a vacation to Big Bear a few years ago, and they both connect John Wayne to my father now, exactly the same way I did when I was their age. Today, my father turns 76 years old, and one of the things that I love about our relationship was the way he defined certain icons of cool for me because I saw what they meant to him. Steve McQueen, for example. I can't think of McQueen without thinking of my dad. On more than one occasion, I was able to get him to stop cold in his tracks simply by flipping past a cable...

The year that gave us Gremlins, Ghostbusters and The Temple Of Doom also gave us these 20 underappreciated movies...
It's been said that 1984 was a vintage year for movies, and looking back, it's easy to see why. The likes of Ghostbusters and Gremlins served up comedy, action and the macabre in equal measure. James Cameron's The Terminator cemented Arnold Schwarzenegger's star status and gave us one of the greatest sci-fi action movies of the decade.
This was also the year where the Coen brothers made their screen debut with the stunning thriller Blood Simple, and when the Zucker brothers followed up Airplane! with the equally hilarious Top Secret! And we still haven't even mentioned Beverly Hills Cop, This Is Spinal Tap, The Karate Kid, Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom and the unexpectedly successful romantic comedy, Splash. In honor of the 2014 summer movie season, Team HitFix will be delivering a mini-series of articles flashing back to key summers from years past. There will be one each month, diving into the marquee events of the era, their impact on the writer and their implications on today's multiplex culture. We continue today with a look back at the summer of 1984. I turned 14 on May 26, 1984, just as the summer movie season was getting started. These days, the summer movie season seems to begin in mid-March, and I think it's because studios want real estate that they can own. And it feels like the appetite for event films is something the audience has year-round now, so if you're able to make something that excites the audience, why not find a place for it where it's not going head to head with all the other giant event films of the year? For the purposes of this piece,...

Today sees the Blu-ray/DVD release of Shadow People, starring The Walking Dead’s Dallas Roberts. If you’re interested in learning more about the movie, check out two clips and real life claims of shadow people encounters.
“They are known by many names in many cultures. In Persia they are called “Bakhtak.” In Japan, they are the “Kanashibari.” In Mexico they’re called the “Subirse el Muerto” and the “Suk Ninmyo” in New Guinea. In America, they are known as “Shadow People.” They are very real, yet no one who has seen them have lived to describe them. Are you willing to believe? Victims report waking from sleep to find themselves paralyzed, a noise buzzing in their head, while a shadowy figure stands watches them, or sometimes even climbs onto their bed. The sightings are widespread around the globe for centuries, but many are afraid to talk about their encounters.

Producer Manes Dead At 79
Film producer Fritz Manes has died at the age of 79.
He lost his battle with lung and brain cancer in Sherman Oaks, California last month.
Manes was born in Oakland in 1932 and went on to attend Piedmont Junior High School with veteran actor/director Clint Eastwood. He then served in the Korean War with the U.S. Marines and was awarded the prestigious Purple Heart for his efforts.
Manes later reunited with the Dirty Harry star and produced many of Eastwood's films, including Any Which Way You Can, Escape from Alcatraz, and Tightrope, before the two had a falling out over the making of Heartbreak Ridge in 1986.
He ultimately created his own production company, Sundancer, and was a member of the California Film Commission.

The actor and director is entering his ninth decade, What accounts for his astonishing professional longevity?
Gallery: 80 years of Clint in 80 pictures
Directors may occasionally be shown respect, perhaps even asked for their autograph, in America, but no one actually likes them. People may admire or envy James Cameron or Steven Spielberg or Francis Ford Coppola or Martin Scorsese, and a significantly smaller group of filmgoers may look forward to Woody Allen's next outing, but they don't have much of an emotional connection with them. This is what makes Clint Eastwood's career so singular.
Because he started out as an actor, and very quickly became an actor that a large segment of the population positively adored, in the same way that they adored Jimmy Cagney and Cary Grant and both Hepburns, Eastwood has long benefited from a personal relationship with the American people that no other living director can even dream of.
