Because Hollywood won’t rest until it’s turned every Terry Gilliam movie into a TV show, Apple TV+ will soon be releasing a Time Bandits series, starring Lisa Kudrow as a temporal plunderer.
While recycling ‘80s films for modern audiences doesn’t always work (I’m looking at you 2014’s RoboCop), this show is produced by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, and judging from the recently-released trailer, it looks like a lot of fun.
Gilliam’s original 1981 Time Bandits was a box-office success when it first came out, and it’s generally regarded to be one of the best children’s fantasy films of its era. But, like much of Gilliam’s work, it was a huge pain in the ass to get made.
As Monty Python fans are well aware, George Harrison put up his own money to fund Life of Brian, mortgaging his home and office when...

Disney has shared a new trailer for their upcoming Disney+ streaming service and it’s over 3-hours long! I don’t know if you want to spend over three hours seeing what Disney+ has to offer when it launches, but you have the option!
Disney+ also posted all of the films and TV shows coming to the streaming service on a super long Twitter thread, which I included below the trailer. As you’ll see there’s a ton of stuff that will be available that will make Disney fans happy. Gargoyles and several other classic 90s animated series are among them along with a lot of old weird films that have been pulled out of the Disney vault.
If you don’t want to watch the trailer or scroll through the Twitter feed, I shared the full list of titles for you. Check everything out below and let us...

Ron Miller, the USC football star who met his future wife Walt Disney’s daughter Diane on a blind date and later became CEO and president of what is now the The Walt Disney Company, has died at age 85. The Walt Disney Co. confirmed Sunday that he passed away Napa Valley, CA.
After stints in the Army and with the Los Angeles Rams, Walt Disney hired his son-in-law to work at The Walt Disney Studios. He became Disney’s sixth employee at the original Disneyland, serving as second assistant on Old Yeller in 1957.
Miller rose up the ranks in film and TV production — his credits include producing The Rescuers, The Shaggy D.A., The Magical World of Disney (which won an Emmy), Herbie Goes Bananas and Tron — and eventually became president and CEO of Walt Disney Productions. He held the post from 1978-1984 until he was famously ousted in a leadership...

Alex Rocco, a veteran character actor most famous for starring in Hollywood classic "The Godfather," has died. He was 79.
Rocco's daughter, Jennifer Rocco, revealed the actor's passing in a series of Facebook posts, writing that her father passed away on July 18 after a long, private battle with cancer. Jennifer Rocco thanked his fans for their support, writing, "I know he is watching over us."
Alex Rocco's prolific career spanned decades, but the actor became synonymous with "The Godfather," the 1972 Oscar-winning film in which he played casino owner Moe Greene. In a 2012 interview with The A.V. Club, Rocco said that that role was "without a doubt, my biggest ticket anywhere. I mean that literally."
Rocco parlayed that fame into a lengthy, eclectic resume in both film and television. He starred most recently on Starz series "Magic City," "Episodes," and "Maron," and also appeared on shows including "The Simpsons," "The Facts of Life,...

It’s not always the actors that are the stars of a film. Sometimes it’s the car. Here’s our list of the 10 most iconic cars in movie history.
Much like in our everyday modern life, cars are a big part of movies. They have created many memorable moments, been a part of many exciting action sequences, and helped to define characters clearly. Cars are much more than just another movie prop. Sometimes they are part of the cast, and others they are the main attraction.
This list commemorates those cars that went above and beyond simple transportation in a film. These are cars that define a particular movie or character. These are cars that, when seen in real life, conjure up images of their movie counterparts. These cars have infiltrated popular culture and become historic icons of both film and motoring.

Herbie, The Love Bug
Written by Arthur Alsberg and Don Nelson
Starring Dean Jones, Patricia Harty, Nicky Katt, Larry Linville, Claudia Wells
When people speak of the possibility of alternate dimensions, they leave out the one closest to us all. We like to imagine a universe so similar to our own, nearly identical to the world in which we live if not for one difference. Maybe in one dimension, Bill Clinton was ousted from office, not just thrown up for impeachment. Maybe in another dimension, HD-DVD won the high-definition home-media war instead of Blu-ray. Or maybe, in some beautiful reality, Scott Norwood didn’t miss that field goal in the Super Bowl against the New York Giants. The possibilities are tantalizing because they are literally endless. In all the wonder and curiosity, however, most of us fail to recognize that there already exists another universe snuggled up tightly to ours,...

Josh brought his Mousterpiece Cinema podcast to Sound on Sight this time last year, starting by reposting his older podcasts beginning with his very first podcast about Cars 2.
One of Ricky D‘s constructive criticisms for Josh on joining the site was that his best podcasts were the ones where he was joined by a guest like Gabriel Bucsko for their podcast on The Muppets film. Since Gabe actually works in Hollywood (an experience he discussed during the podcast on the cinematic atrocity Disney Animated classic Fox and the Hound 2) he is not regularly available to do the podcast. I volunteered to be a more regular co-host, taking the opportunity of Gabe being around to boycott films I had no interest in watching or re-watching like say the Disney Direct to Video Sequels, Midquels and Prequels, or films I couldn’t get my hands on, or allow me to...

Fatboy Slim Live From The Big Beach Boutique, Nationwide
Fatboy Slim's Big Beach Bootique, an all-the-trimmings shindig with lasers and pyrotechnics to make a Muse fan weep, is a bit of a fixture in the DJ's hometown of Brighton. In 2002, 250,000 people crammed on to Brighton beach to hear Cook play for free when organisers expected only 60,000.This year's outing was staged at Brighton & Hove Albion Fc's Amex stadium, where a 600 square metre Led video wall stretched the length of the pitch. The gig was filmed and will be shown for one night only at eight Picturehouse screens across the UK, as well as at cinemas worldwide. A bit of an intimate affair compared to Fatboy's Olympics closing ceremony appearance, but still. Come along in fancy dress and you might win a prize. But please: no whistles.

Herbie Goes Bananas
Written by Don Tait, based on the novel Car, Boy, Girl by Gordon Buford
Directed By Vincent McEveety
USA, 1980, imdb
Listen to our Mousterpiece Cinema Herbie Goes Bananas podcast or read Josh‘s extended thoughts about the film.
*****
Some films acquire a bad reputation that sticks like a bad smell, driving potential viewers away before they ever see it. Everyone knows that Alien³ and Alien Resurrection are terrible even especially those who have never seen the film. This fate happens particularly to notorious bombs – especially to films that (temporarily) kill off franchises. There is a perverse feedback loop in place, the film bombed because no one went to see it, and since the film bombed it must be terrible, so no one wants to watch it.
But this is confusing quality with popularity. They can be linked, but films bombing may result from any number of factors...

Herbie: Fully Loaded
Directed by Angela Robinson
Written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar & Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant
Starring Lindsay Lohan, Michael Keaton, Justin Long, Matt Dillon
Somehow, I have survived the world of Herbie, the Love Bug. This gauntlet has been trying, but I’ve grown as a person by making it through. Unfortunately, the movies that this magical Volkswagen is the star of haven’t really grown. Even as we reach the finale of the series (at least in terms of those movies that were released in theaters), Herbie is strictly sticking with the formula, racing a few times, changing the lives of the people who drive him, and getting into a few scrapes along the way. While the series has many dedicated fans, including my esteemed co-host Michael, I think one of the reasons why the series isn’t as thoroughly beloved as other...

Herbie Goes Bananas
Directed by Vincent McEveety
Written by Gordon Buford and Don Tait
USA, 1980
I cannot believe that a movie as wrongheaded and idiotic as Herbie Goes Bananas exists. Herbie Goes Bananas is so bad, it makes Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo look like the combined 1940s output of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (better known as The Archers), from The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp to The Small Back Room. In fact, I’m insulting The Archers’ films by even including them in the same sentence as anything pertaining to Herbie Goes Bananas. I could, frankly, spend this entire column cataloguing the many things in the world that are more enjoyable, funny, exciting, and lively than Herbie Goes Bananas. But while it’d be fun…well, I’m not sure how to finish that sentence. Let’s just assume the alternate-universe column where I tell you exactly...

Listeners, it’s finally come to this. After four films starring the rascally Love Bug himself, Herbie, your hosts Josh and Michael have begun to question each other’s sanity. The real culprit is the topic of this week’s podcast, the 1980 film Herbie Goes Bananas, where the supposedly lovable Vw Beetle faces off against scheming thieves, an outrageously horny older woman, a stuffy cruise-ship captain, and a fuming bull. (Absolutely none of that is a lie or a joke. We promise.) For anyone hoping that Michael would, for once, succumb to the Dark Side, you may be disappointed, but you’ll get to hear Josh rage and rant like never before. This one’s an episode for the pantheon, so check out the new Mousterpiece Cinema today!

There were a couple of storylines in this week's box-office numbers. First off, the number one film, Rio, bested expectations to open with $40 million this weekend, the highest grossing opening weekend for an animated feature since Toy Story 3. Rio's box-office tally also helped this week to break the year's slump, the first weekend in quite some time that 2011 outperformed the comparable week in 2010.
Not a lot of thanks is owed to Scream 4 for that, however, as the Wes Craven sequel actually underperformed at the box office this weekend, whimpering beneath the $20 million mark with $19.2 million. That's considerable less than the openings for Scream 2 and Scream 3 (around the $32 million range) and far less than what 2009's Nightmare on Elm Street remake managed ($40 million). Even 2008's Prom Night remake managed $20 million, and it was awful, as opposed to Scream 4, which was merely disappointing in the middle (but bookended...

Bill Shepard, a casting director who worked for Walt Disney Studios and director Mel Brooks, died Sept. 20 of a heart attack at Sherman Oaks Hospital and Health Center. He was 79.
Shepard spent 17 years casting films and TV shows at Disney, then went on to work in a similar capacity on "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" (1989) and such Brooks' comedies as "Spaceballs" (1987), "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" (1993) and "Dracula: Dead and Loving It" (1995).
Shepard was responsible for giving Michael J. Fox his first feature film role when he cast the young Canadian to star in Disney's 1980 film "Midnight Madness."
"Bill not only found stars and big players that helped make the pictures successful," Brooks said, "but he also was a genius at finding the right featured players and smaller character roles that gave my movies depth and reality. I could always rely on him to do a great job."
