After spending nearly fifteen years in development hell, the Red Sonja reboot has finally started filming! Millennium Media has announced that Red Sonja is being directed by M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) and stars Matilda Lutz (Revenge) as the title character.
Bassett came on board to direct the film five months ago when previously attached director Joey Soloway (Transparent) and star Hannah John-Kamen left the project. Bassett is still working from the screenplay Soloway wrote with Tasha Huo (Netflix’s Tomb Raider anime). This version of Red Sonja is derived from the sword and sorcery comic books by Dynamite Entertainment, based on the character created by Robert E. Howard and adapted by Roy Thomas.
Lutz is joined in the cast by Wallis Day (Sex/Life) as Annisia, Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy) as Draygan, Michael Bisping (xXx: Return of Xander Cage) as Hawk, Martyn Ford (F9: The Fast Saga) as General Karlak,...

Humans battling the forces of nature is a rich vein for filmmakers to mine and is unlikely to ever be tapped out, with yet another example seen in the first trailer for action thriller Rogue.
The movie, sadly, is not a standalone feature for the X-Men‘s power-absorbing southern belle, but the title instead refers to rogue lions, big cats without a pride. These are typically young males chased away by an older leader they were unable to overpower and usurp, but the trailer makes explicit mention of the antagonistic animal in question being female, probably indicating she’s unusually ferocious.
The story sees a group of mercenaries sent to rescue a young woman kidnapped by a militia group in Africa, but after being stranded, they seek refuge in a remote building, only to become menaced by the killer kitty of the title, trapping them inside as the enemy closes in on them.

"Some lions go rogue... She likes to kill." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an action movie titled Rogue, the latest from director M.J. Bassett. Megan Fox stars in this "explosive action saga" as a battle-hardened mercenary. As team leader O'Hara, she leads a lively squad of soldiers on a daring mission: rescue a hostage from captors in a remote region of Africa. But when the mission goes awry and the team is stranded, O'Hara's squad must face a bloody, brutal encounter with a gang of rebels — and the horde of ravenous, enraged lions they encounter at a seemingly abandoned farm. Can they survive attacks from rebels and lions? This also stars Philip Winchester, Calli Taylor, Jessica Sutton, Lee-Anne Liebenberg, Brandon Auret, Adam Deacon, and Sisanda Henna. This looks especially bland and bad. As hard as she tries, Megan Fox just can't act - even opposite the CGI lions.

Ash vs Evil Dead, Season 1, Episode 2, “Bait”
Written by Dominic Dierkes
Directed by Michael J. Bassett
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on Starz
The premiere of Ash vs Evil Dead left this reviewer a little cold. The tone of the episode felt too wonky, the prospect of sustaining the introduced story over a series of half-hour episodes seemed dubious, and the general creepy but humorous charm of the first two Evil Dead films had given way to the full-blown Three Stooges-esque mayhem of Army of Darkness. So the second episode, “Bait”, being is a vast improvement in every conceivable way is a great surprise and relief . What makes this all the more unexpected is that this is the first episode without Evil Dead mastermind Sam Raimi directing or writing. Has Raimi been out of the Evil Dead game for so long that he just didn’t quite know how...

There really aren’t enough female-headlined action films, so when one comes along it’s almost worth a look on its existence alone. Ideally it will lean more Haywire than Mercenaries quality-wise, but the paucity of options means we’ll take what we can get at this point. Happily, the newest lady-led action picture, Momentum, is an entertaining and frequently thrilling ride that very nearly lives up to its title. A high-tech team of slick-looking bank robbers are midway through their heist when mistakes and bad attitudes get the better of them. One of their number is killed, and another is unmasked in front of the hostages. With her face all over the news, Alex (Olga Kurylenko, Quantum of Solace) is forced to lay low and wait for the deal with those who hired her team to wrap up, but a double cross leaves her on the run and low on options. A...

In the opening moments of Starz's "Ash vs. Evil Dead," director Sam Raimi presents the kind of rapidly-edited montages that became a signature part of the "Evil Dead" films, as demon-fighting hero Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) straps some kind of complicated device to his body. Is it another chainsaw to fit over the hand he chopped off in 1987's "Evil Dead II"? The mechanical metal hand he had forged in 1993's "Army of Darkness"? Nope. It's a corset, there to help Ash maintain the illusion that he's still as sleek as he was back in his glory days of battling the Deadites. It's the kind of self-deprecating joke that's defined Bruce Campbell's career — a career where, even when he's not playing Ash, the audience often winds up filtering the role he's playing through an Ash-colored prism — but also a smart move by the creative team (the first episode was written by Ivan Raimi,...

If we wanted a sensible police drama, we wouldn't be watching The Following. Where has all the craziness gone, asks Ron?
This review contains spoilers.
1.7 The Hunt
One of the best things about The Following is that it is set in a world with an infinite supply of serial killers. That's also one of the worst things about The Following, as it lends itself to laziness. Whenever one of the killers we know is in trouble, well, we just have that person turn to someone in his network of murderer pals to help him solve his problem. When it's someone like Arthur Strauss reaching out to one of his many students, it makes sense. We've seen Strauss at work training other killers, we know he's got hundreds of students committing thousands of murders, and it makes sense that they'd be willing to stick their neck out to help the man...

Just gonna air a gripe here in the column for visibility’s sake: Dark Horse Comic’s app, for reading their comics digitally? It sucks. And I’m angry about it, but not just because it sucks. No, I’m angry because Comixology, which works wonderfully, is clearly the template for Dark Horse’s app. Dark Horse Comics apparently doesn’t care about convenience or, you know, being reasonable. They’d prefer to have their own app, one that sucks frankly, than participate in the Comixology ecosystem. It’s like… let’s say you’re a video game company and you’ve got some really great games, right? And there’s this huge, incredibly efficient, perfectly-organized distribution platform that would be perfect for your games and would put them right in the hands of gamers who desperately want to play them. But instead of actually using that delivery system, you Make Your Own.

I, Frankenstein
Directed by Stuart Beattie
Written by Kevin Grevioux and Stuart Beattie
USA, 2013
Despite having his origins in classic literature, Frankenstein’s monster has become a truly cinematic beast, having shown up in countless screen iterations since first being brought to life by Boris Karloff in 1931. No surprise, then, that I, Frankenstein, originally a comic series by Underworld scribe Kevin Grevioux would get the big-screen treatment, and even less of a surprise to results aren’t particularly pretty.
Aaron Eckhart stars as the creature, this time named Adam, who becomes embroiled in a centuries-old war between demons and gargoyles, who are both God’s warriors on Earth and far less interesting than any early-90s Disney Channel cartoons would have you believe. Though he initially wants no part of the war, having no love for humanity, Adam is forced into the conflict when the demons begin pursuing him, hell-bent...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Robert E. Howard was a popular fantasy fiction author back in the 20s and 30s. His most popular character, Conan the Barbarian has muscled his way onto the big screen three times so far and has starred in a long-running comic book series. Now his next most famous creation, Solomon Kane, has been filmed and the result, Solomon Kane is a mixed bag.
Starting in 1600 Solomon Kane (played James Purefoy), is a ruthless English soldier/mercenary who lives a life of bloodshed and violence. I love movie posters. They’re a great art form in and of themselves. Over the hundred years of film production countless talented artists have churned out poster after poster for films both good and bad. So I thought it’d be fun to introduce a new ongoing feature here on City of Films…Poster Friday!
Every Friday I’ll post a couple of posters that I really enjoy. They could be from current films, they could be from films released years before you were born, all that matters is that I like ‘em.
When possible I’ll try to track down who it was that did these posters, a bit simpler for modern films but I’ll do my best for all of them.
So which two posters appear in this premiere?! Find out below!!

One minor classic, a worthwhile flick that arrived pre-Spielberg & Lucas blockbuster territory, is certainly the 1970 sci-fi film Colossus: The Forbin Project. This little sweethart is now seeing new life with a new screenwriter. Ed Solomon (Men in Black) set to rewrite the script of Colossus, which has Will Smith attached to headline. This means that Solomon will once again team on a Smith-starrer. Based on a book by D.F. A young women's boyfriend falling for another man called for a re-examination of contemporary relationships in The Sex Of The Angels, sexual tension turned domesticity upside down in In The House, and there was tense drama in A Hijacking (review coming soon), Andrew Robertson's favourite of the festival so far.

Christophe Gans’ Silent Hill, while thoroughly imperfect, was at least a stylistically faithful adaptation of the popular video game, and continues to stand tall as the most reverent one to date. The film’s modest successes are not repeated, however, in Michael J. Bassett’s (Deathwatch, Solomon Kane) inept, offensive butchering of the outstanding third Silent Hill game.
Fans of the game will be acutely aware of why Bassett has chosen not to just adapt the second title in the series, because Silent Hill 3 shares a direct narrative fabric with the first game, whereas the second – easily the best game of the lot – is almost completely unrelated beyond sharing the same setting. And while the first few minutes of Revelation demonstrate some sure promise, accurately replicating the nightmarish carnival scene from the start of the third game, the overly busy, spasmodic direction continually places the viewer at arm’s length.

Horror sequel starring X-Men Origins' Adelaide Clemens as a teenager on the run from dark forces that want her to return to the fiendishly haunted American town of Silent Hill. When her father (Sean Bean) is captured by the shadowy cult, she has to head back to her ash-swathed home and into a demonic world that threatens to trap her forever. Based on the video game Silent Hill 3, director Michael J Bassett (Solomon Kane) fashions a disturbing alternative reality, featuring the visually arresting stuff of nightmares.

I watched the first Silent Hill movie as a refresher before heading off to see Silent Hill: Revelation. After all these years, it surprisingly still holds up well. But the original writer Roger Avary (Pulp Fiction) and director Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of The Wolf) are not attached to the sequel. Instead, Michael J. Basset (Solomon Kane) has taken on both writing and directing duties and the lack of creative consistency is definitely felt. Absent is the sense of mystery possessed by the first film. Instead, we are beaten over the head with repeat summaries of the events of the first film which take up an unnecessarily large amount of the film's meager 1 hr 34min runtime. Once Revelation is absolutely sure that the audience is clear on the events of the first film, the film goes one misstep further with an incredibly convenient yet still...

*full disclosure: an early theatrical screening of this film was provided by Alliance Films. **story lines are revealed here. Director/writer: Michael J. Bassett. Cast: Adelaide Clemens, Kit Harington, Carrie-Anne Moss, Sean Bean, Radha Mitchell, Malcolm McDowell, Martin Donovan, Deborah Kara Unger, and Roberto Campanella. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is the second film based on a game from Konami. It has been six years since there has been a Silent Hill movie. In this time, the central writer has been changed from the Silent Hill (2006) zealout Roger Avary (Beowulf) to Michael J. Bassett (Solomon Kane). The story has been affected with this transition. While a continuation of the first film, Bassett's rushed script is light on subplots and heavy on a mildly interesting heroic storyline. Visuals and elements of the occult are strongly present, but there is little tension in this sequel. This is a a solid popcorn flick that...

Video game movie adaptations are one of the most difficult movies to create for the big screen.

There have been no less than nine different video games to bear the name of Silent Hill since the first chapter arrived in 1999, and by this point it's safe to say that the Konami franchise has built up a pretty strong fan base for their endless horror series -- but only one movie so far. By comparison, Capcom's Resident Evil, which debuted three years earlier now boasts 23 game releases and seven movie adaptations, if you're including the animated ones, but that franchise offers numerous beautiful women who kill zombies, whereas Silent Hill just has ... the world's creepiest town. The first movie arrived via Christoph Gans in 2006, and while it's a bit longer than any video-game-based horror flick has any right (or need) to be, it still holds up as a rather impressive visual display on unpleasant eeriness.
So how's the sequel?
