The exciting crossovers between DC and anime have been hit or miss so far. For instance, both Batman Ninja and the Suicide Squad Isekai garnered mixed reviews from the audience. A new project titled ‘Batman Ninja vs Yakuza League‘ has been announced.
The project is seemingly off to a good start. From whatever little we know about the project at present, it might turn around the luck for DC and anime crossovers.

Have you ever had a friend pause the anime you’re desperately trying to shove at them to ask, “Why did those two girls just turn into cars?” or “How does that orangutan have a stand?” or “How are they still alive?” No matter the question, the answer’s the same: “Because anime!” Everything in anime is a little larger than life. And in some anime absolutely everything is way larger than life and dialed to 11 at absolutely every second of its runtime. Here is a (certainly nonexhaustive list) of some great over-the-top anime you can watch right now. Brave Bang Bravern! Have you been in the mood for an old-school mecha anime that goes over-the-top in every conceivable way? Yes? Then do I have great news for you! Brave Bang Bravern! is a mecha anime that is an ode to all the big, bombastic, definitely over-the-top mecha anime that came before it.

Hiroyuki Imaishi is one of the biggest names in anime, helping create some of the most bombastic series of all time. Two of those, Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill , continue to showcase the best in animation even today. To celebrate both, Studio Trigger, Aniplex and Parco are holding a roadshow exhibition in cities across Japan through the end of the year. The first Gurren Lagann vs. Kill la Kill Exhibition stop was Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district, where Crunchyroll News headed to the Parco Factory and do the impossible by checking the exhibition out. Row, Row, Fight the Power The exhibit first opened with a room showcasing Gurren Lagann , whose first episode premiered over 17 years ago on April 1, 2007. That age was apparent with the original key animation, not duplicates or reproductions, on display at the exhibition, complete with crumpled corners, coffee stains and even some stray line art that would usually be fixed up.

Are you folks all enjoying the most delightfully strange show of the season? In case you haven’t heard, Train to the End of the World has been offering a weekly slice of absurdity in a world gone mad, with its heroines traveling from one wildly jumbled town to the next in the wake of the 7G-prompted quasi-apocalypse. It’s got a charming cast, an absolute bounty of ridiculous ideas, and a snappiness of execution that somehow binds all these variables together. It’s the kind of show that feels like it would be almost impossible to get right, and if so, only through lucky chance — that is, so long as you’re not familiar with its brilliant director. Tsutomu Mizushima is far from the flashiest director working in modern anime. His work doesn’t tend to possess clear visual signatures, a consistency of aesthetic and tone that makes it...

Gainax, the iconic but latterly tarnished, Japanese animation producer behind anime series “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” has filed for bankruptcy. It had been in operation for nearly 40 years.
The company made the announcement on Friday, via its own website, and said that it had filed its petition with the courts on May 29. The problem of the heavy debt burden that it had been carrying for several years had been made worse by the tangles of mismanagement.
The news emerged at a moment when the Japanese government, sensing growing international interest in Japanese pop culture, has pledged to help manga (comic) and anime (animated series and films) exporters. It also comes just a day before the beginning of the world’s biggest annual animation festival, the Annecy International Animated Film Festival (June 9-15).

Anime studio Gainax announced on its official website on June 7 that the business officially filed for bankruptcy with the Tokyo District Court on May 29, with the court accepting the application. Gainax is best known as the studio that produced Neon Genesis Evangelion , Flcl , Gunbuster , Gurren Lagann and many more classic anime. The statement, penned by representative director Yasuhiro Kamimura, apologized to creditors, those who were working with Gainax to help alleviate the situation prior to the bankruptcy and fans. Kamimura wrote, “We had no choice but to choose bankruptcy because we were unable to fully achieve our goals.” Kamimura states that since 2012 Gainax’s “financial situation worsened" in relation to managing a restaurant, starting a CG company and sizeable unsecured loans to then-executives, all of which caused debt to accrue. This even led to situations where Gainax was removed from production committees they were a part of. The studio also...

Look Back Director Says Film Completed Day Before Premiere - Main Image
There have been many reports about crunch working conditions in anime productions over the years. The latest is Look Back, as its director recently revealed that he only completed the film the day before its premiere.
While this movie is only set to be released in Japanese cinemas on June 28, it had an early premiere recently ahead of the Annecy International Animation Festival.
It’s not clear if this meant that the film was shown in an unfinished state, but what can be said for certain is that its director spent many sleepless nights working on it.

In a recent interview with Febri, renowned anime director Hiroyuki Imaishi talked about why he believes it would be impossible to recreate an anime like Kill La Kill today.
Reflecting on a recent screening event where he revisited past episodes, Imaishi revealed that he was struck by the realization that recreating the magic of Kill La Kill would be nearly impossible today.
Imaishi explained that this feeling wasn’t new and surfaced with every project he undertook, but it was especially pronounced in this instance. He emphasized that Kill La Kill was a product of its time, achievable only under the specific conditions and creative environment that existed back then.
Moreover, the production of Kill La Kill didn’t involve much of a planning (even if it was more than what was done during the making of his earlier work Gurren Lagann) and Studio Trigger didn’t have the resources...

Since 2007, the "Transformers" movies have been A) Primarily set on Earth (excepting prologues in "Dark of the Moon" and "Bumblebee" showing the war for planet Cybertron) and B) Live-action, using CGI to integrate the Autobots and Decepticons into real settings. Director Josh Cooley ("Toy Story 4") is about to change that with "Transformers One." /Film's Ryan Scott, who attended the Paramount Pictures panel at CinemaCon 2024, got an early look at the upcoming animated movie.
"Transformers One" is a prequel set before the war when the Autobots and Decepticons were still one people. Since the movie is set entirely on Cybertron with only robot characters, it makes sense to tell the story through animation. "Transformers" is no stranger to prequels -- check out the comic series "The War Within," High Moon Studios' video game duology "War for Cybertron" and "Fall of Cybertron," and more. Still, this is new territory for the films.

Star Wars has always pulled influences from many places, including old serials, "Dune," and several of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's films. Because of this, Star Wars is both a specific vision and also a world that is recognizable everywhere. In more recent years, anime has deeply impacted the franchise far, far away and taken it towards new heights.
Whether it's "The Clone Wars" or even "Star Wars: Visions," the franchise has looked towards Japanese anime for aesthetic inspiration. But it wasn't until this year that we finally got a canonical display of one of the biggest and most iconic aspects of anime: mecha suits.

"Rocky" is one of the most iconic franchises of all time, one that captured the change in Hollywood from the rise of independent dramas of the '70s into the bombastic action films of the '80s. Yet the franchise started losing popularity, never capable of recapturing the awards praise of the original film or the commercial success of "Rocky IV."
Which makes the "Creed" movies kind of a miracle. Seemingly every site on the internet has written a "Top Anime Betrayals" article. It has its own meme and everything. Obviously, we're no better, but it makes sense that people keep coming back to the subject. "Betrayal" covers a lot of ground. Depending on the writer's frame of reference and what hits them, personally, in the guts, there are a huge number of ways to approach the subject. Which characters are you the most emotionally invested in? Which show did you see at a formative age? Have you watched much anime beyond big-budget Shonen Jump adaptations?

Instead, we present you with 13 gut-punching betrayals that changed the way we looked at these stories, reshaped the courses of their respective narratives, or affected other titles for years to come. "House of the Dragon" is quickly becoming the best George R. R. Martin adaptation yet, a show that embraces the best parts of "Game of Thrones" but does away with what didn't work there. Sure, we may lack some of the sense of urgency from "Game of Thrones" and its catchy "Winter Is Coming" tagline, but by taking what is essentially just a history book and filling in the gaps of the story, we're getting a faithful-yet-surprising and poignant-yet-entertaining tragedy about the fall of a family due to very stupid choices.
But the show is not all violence, boobs, and funerals. "House of the Dragon" is also unafraid to be outright weird. "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" is an animated spin-off of "Cyberpunk 2077," a blockbuster sci-fi dystopian video game that itself was made in a pretty dystopian manner. It's also the newest show by Hiroyuki Imaishi, the director of "Gurren Lagann" and "Promare."

His work features bombastic action, rude humor, and enough lens flares to give J.J. Abrams a headache. Imaishi's work is popular among international fans, some of whom were inspired to become animators themselves. Others argue that Imaishi's descendants, such as Yoshimichi Kameda and Imaishi's protege Akira Amemiya, have long surpassed him as animator and director respectively. Even so, "Edgerunners" holds its own in what is set to be a very busy fall for the anime industry.
Imaishi crams his animated works with references to shows, movies and comics he likes.

Audio elements and sound design, especially the score, are as fundamental to animation as the visuals. The proper use of music at the right time can make the action soar and it’s genuinely exciting that more experimental and passionate creators are embracing the sonic possibilities that television allows. Flying Lotus is an innovative musician with a flair for the extraordinary that cut his teeth on many of the surreal animated series that fill Adult Swim’s programming block.
In addition to his frequent collaborations with Adult Swim, Flying Lotus’ music can be heard in everything from The Boondocks, to Grand Theft Auto V, to episodes of Atlanta and Insecure. Flying Lotus approaches art like a wondrous game and the cleansing energy that comes from his music feels like it’s trying to do something important beyond simple entertainment. The duo of director Hiroyuki Imaishi and writer Kazuki Nakashima, along with Studio Trigger seem to produce only masterpieces, since their three works include “Gurren Lagann“, “Promare” and the present title.
The story takes place in Honnouji Academy, a high school in Tokyo Bay, where Satsuki Kiryuin is the head of a rather powerful council governing over hundreds of students. Just below her are the “Four Devas”, a quartet of also quite strong students, who are dedicated to her, despite having their own agendas, on occasion. What is the unique thing about Honnouji, however, is that the students are wearing Goku Uniforms, special suits created from a material known as Life Fibers, which are bestowed to them based on their skills and accomplishments. Furthermore, the better suit a student wears, the better situated in the area is his/her family, in a society that is rather segregated.

Hiroyuki Imaishi is–in the very best way–one of animation’s finest ambassadors of Adhd. His 2004 directorial debut, Dead Leaves, is a masterpiece of sci-fi action insanity: 50 minutes of delirious stylized motion, featuring ultra-angular “superflat” designs combining the most expressive deformities of Eastern and Western comics and cartoons; a psychedelic adrenaline rush that diffuses the full density of a pulpy jailbreak action flick into half the running time and several times the visual scope. It is the pure cinematic embodiment of a film viewer, and filmmaker, whose bountiful imagination strikes dynamite creative synthesis with a short-fuse attention span. Dead Leaves was a minor event at the time, consigned to direct-to-dvd release overseas and ultimately, perhaps, too aggressively weird and explicit to capture the fancy of either mainstream critics or otaku. But 15 years later, Imaishi–who found breakout success in TV anime and co-founded his own studio, Trigger–has become...

Anime fans are hoping that animation Trigger will bring back fan-favorite character Zero-Two for Darling In The FranXX Season 2. It really depends on how they plan on ending Episode 24, but is it possible that the second season of DarliFra could be similar to the second act of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann? Keep in mind that studio Trigger was founded by former Gainax employees Hiroyuki Imaishi and Masahiko Ohtsuka. Hiroyuki was the director for Gurren Lagann and now director and storyboard writer for the Darling In The FranXX anime. Besides meaning that certain characters are doomed, audiences could end up watching another […]

I’ve long had a soft spot for stories that transplant Batman to different times. The best is probably Gotham By Gaslight, which imagines a Victorian Batman tangling with Jack the Ripper, but I also have a huge soft spot for Grant Morrison’s time-hopping miniseries Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne, in which we see Caveman Batman, Witchhunter Batman, Pirate Batman, Cowboy Batman and 30s Gumshoe Batman. So, I’m naturally over the moon with this new trailer for Batman Ninja.
First announced at the New York Comic-Con, the project is the brainchild of DC and a number of anime and manga superstars. Namely, Junpei Mizusaki (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure), Takashi Okazashi (Afro Samurai), and Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann).
From what I can tell from the trailer, the movie opens with Batman and the Joker engaged in a typically tense battle to the death, only to find themselves hurled back to medieval Japan.

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion
In the year 2015, the Angels, huge, tremendously powerful, alien war machines, appear in Tokyo for the second time. The only hope for mankind’s survival lies in the Evangelion, a humanoid fighting machine developed by Nerv, a special United Nations agency. Capable of withstanding anything the Angels can dish out, the Evangelions’ one drawback lies in the limited number of people able to pilot them. Only a handful of teenagers, all born fourteen years ago, nine months after the Angels first appeared, are able to interface with an Evangelion.
One such teenager is Ikari Shinji, whose father heads the Nerv team that developed and maintains the Evangelions. Thrust into a maelstrom of battles and events that he does not understand, Shinji is forced to plumb the depths of his own inner resources for the courage and strength to not only fight, but to survive, or risk losing everything.

So, you want to start watching anime but have no idea where to begin? That’s understandable. After all, anime isn’t a genre, it’s a medium in its own right, complete with different styles, sub-genres and target audiences.
Honestly, it can be pretty intimidating trying to find something that’s right for you, or even knowing where to begin your search. The sheer scope and variety of anime can be nothing short of daunting for anyone who hasn’t already taken the dive.
Death Note and Hamtaro couldn’t be more different; neither could Gurren Lagann and Attack on Titan, or Fullmetal Alchemist and Mobile Suit Gundam. It’s a complex world; a beautiful and bizarre one that will fully reward its viewership, but it can be a little jarring for newbies.
There’s no shame whatsoever in finding yourself a little lost. If anime has...

News first surfaced on an anime adaptation of One-Punch Man earlier this month with a second report stating that it would premiere later this year in October. Now, we have details on the anime studio and staff that will be working on the project. Madhouse, the studio behind great anime series such as Hunter x Hunter and Batman: Gotham Knight among others, is the Japanese animation studio shepherding the project. Director Shingo Natsume (Space Dandy) will be directing the series while Chikashi Kubota (Gurren Lagann, Space Dandy) will design the characters. One-Punch Man is a manga series written by One with art from Yuusuke Murata that revolves around the titular hero, Saitama and his everyday life as a superhero. In his quest to become strong, Saitama trained to such an extent that he can defeat any enemy with just one punch. The drawback to having such power is that Saitama...

Scottish distributor Anime Ltd. impressed people with their announced releases this year, of several titles new and old, movies and series. Now that we finally see those releases roll out, it's time to be impressed again. Last month we saw an Ultimate Edition of Gurren Lagann arrive (we wrote a similar article about it here), and this month we get the newest series by the same director: Imaishi Hiroyuki's Kill La Kill. In a rather bold move, Anime Ltd. releases Kill La Kill a mere seven months after its original Japanese broadcast ended. This means the license is still hot and expensive, and Anime Ltd. has to release it above a certain price point, far above what other distributors in the UK have often dismissed...
