Teach Yourself Hindi Book/CD Pack (Teach Yourself Complete Courses) Paperback – 25 Nov. 2005
Using a book/CD combination, this is a complete course in understanding, speaking and writing Hindi, the language spoken by over 275 million people throughout the world. If you are a beginner, or if your Hindi just needs brushing up, this course will progress quickly beyond the basics to a level where you can communicate with confidence. The course has proved effective as teaching material for both class tuition and individual study.
The Hindi presented in the course is primarily colloquial and practical. An advantage of this approach is that it gives greater access to Urdu, Hindi's sister language. Hindi and Urdu share a virtually identical grammar and much of their vocabulary.
The course is divided into 18 units, each of which is based on dialogues which exemplify and bring to life the new grammar introduced in that particular unit. Transliteration in the roman script is provided for the first five units and for all words in the Hindi-English glossary. The dialogues form a kind of soap opera based on the life of a Delhi family; the English translations are deliberately close and literal, so as to form a key to the Hindi. The grammatical explanations are intended to be as accessible and non-technical as possible. The main grammatical structures of Hindi are all presented. There are plenty of exercises for you to practise every new point and a key at the back so that you can check your answers.
The book (0 340 86687 X) is accompanied by 2 cassettes (0 340 86688 8) or 2 CDs (0 340 91383 5) containing approximately 2 hours of listening material. The audio can be purchased on its own or as packs with the book (book/cassette pack: 0 340 86686 1; book/CD pack: 0 340 91382 7).

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 July 2009This a great product, once you've used Rupert Snells Conversational Hindi CD package. If you work through in that order, this product will make more sense. Namaste!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 May 2013Delivery within the expected timeline and the item was in decent condition although it was quite dusty.I have not used the DVD yet so I will have to come back to confirm it is all working fine.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 March 2010I agree with a previous review made here. The audio and book do not correlate. I was also very confused when I borrow this course. However the principle how the course teaches does work and is good as well. Its very comprehensive and you will learn hindi eventually. However you can do this a lot easier. Check the living language Hindi course. It also starts with the script and teaches you from the very first and brings you rapidly to where you want to be. I think learning with this book is unnecessarily difficult and as a beginner unnecessary difficulty is offputting. Langauge learning should be fun not a task
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2010This is brilliant! I am only on the first CD of the 3 CD set but have found it really easy to learn. There is a book to follow the conversations and words, and as far as I can see the CDs follow a format where they teach you some words, play the conversation, teach you aspects of the pronunciation or sentence construction rules, and then prompt you to answer questions yourself (or play one of the characters in the conversation). The Hindi speakers I know say that it is teaching quite a formal style of Hindi, but as I haven't got to the end of the set yet I'm not sure if it goes on to teach you a more colloquial style later on. Either way, as long as people can understand what I'm trying to say I'm happy! I'd definitely recommend this audio CD set.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 April 2010This is by far the best complete course in hindi available. The well written book is split into chapters which gradually build on vocabulary and introduce more complex grammar as you get further through it. The CDs have dialogues and exercises that match those in the book, so it is very easy to practice speaking, listening and reading. There are also many potential writing exercises in the book, and enough is said about the script for you to be able to pick up that too.
One of the best things about the book is that all the dialogues and many of the exercises are based on a gradually unfolding story with lots of characters that you are introduced to as the chapters move on. This little human touch makes it more interesting and fun to learn. It also means that the hindi you learn is very much the spoken hindi of India - not some overly formal, stiff sounding hindi that will mark you out instantly as a foreigner.
If you want a book that covers all the basics, and gives you plenty of practice with speaking and listening, then you should get this course. You can start as a complete beginner and learn quickly and easily, as long as you are willing to put the effort in.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 June 2009I am a sixteen year old school boy, and decided that (for some reason!) I wanted to learn to speak, read and write Hindi. I bought this book hoping for an introductory guide to get me going, and wasn't disappointed. I then thought, I want to progress further than just the basics, and again, wasn't disappointed.
Having read some other reviews of this book, I feel I must say that the script is the bet bit. After only a few days, I was able to read (though obviously not always understand) all that the book threw at me. The beginning section on the script is very clearly set out, and makes it very easy to learn.
This book is set out so logically, and so clearly, that it makes learning an enjoyable experience, while still greatly challenging you to improve.
It is crammed with useful phrases that you could use in India, and I am looking forward to using my new knowledge in a trip to India later this year.
I strongly reccommend that you buy this book, it is really comprehensive and interesting, yet still challenging.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 December 2014ok if u know a bit of hindi
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 July 2009Useful book for any beginner wanting to learn Hindi. This book is even recommended to people who take Hindi courses in India itself as a learning aid. The book is clearly set out and one can progress through the early units fairly quickly and even learn to read the script within one week. I'd suggest doing about an hour a day. The CD provided is a nice tool for understanding the correct pronunciation of letters and words. After the first few units its becomes more difficult as the only way to learn to speak a new language is to learn new vocabulary...which is bit tedious. Hindi itself isn't a very complex language in terms of grammar and irregularity so you should progress reasonably quickly with the help of this book.
