Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been prescribed extensively throughout the world. Including over-the-counter use, more than 30 billion doses of NSAIDs are consumed each year in the United States alone; these drugs are nearly omnipresent in the homes of patients. However, NSAID reaction risk increases with age, dose and duration of use, concurrent drugs, and underlying conditions such as cardiovascular disease, recent coronary artery bypass graft surgery, and history of peptic ulcer disease or gastrointestinal bleeding.
Are you aware of the appropriate uses of NSAIDs for your patients — and the uses they should avoid? Test yourself with this quick quiz.
