Inherited from Vulgar Latin *exbattere, from battere, from Latin ex- + battuere, present active infinitive of battuō. Cf. Aromanian zbat, zbatiri, Italian sbattere, Venetan sbàter, sbàtar, Sicilian sbàttiri, Friulian sbati.
