From Proto-Finnic *vik'at'ëh, possibly from Proto-Balto-Slavic *vikapteš, derived from the same verb as izkapts. Cognates include Finnish viikate, Karelian viikateh, Livonian vikārt, Ludian vikateh, Votic vikahtõ, (Mati) vikastõ, Veps vikateh and Ingrian viigade.
