Borrowed from Old Norse þeli (ground freeze) from Proto-Germanic *þelą. (compare dialectal Norwegian tele (frozen earth)). Cognates include synonymous Estonian teli (dialectal), Ingrian teli and Karelian jeäteli, all probably borrowed from Finnish.[1] Doublet of tela.

This term may also be part of the split form of a verb prefixed with teli-, the alternative form of tele-, occurring when the main verb does not follow the prefix directly.
