[edit]From Mediaeval Greek παρακονη (parakonē, "whetstone"), from Ancient Greek παρακονάω (parakonáō, “I sharpen, whet”), from παρά (pará) + ἀκόνη (akónē, “whetstone”). Compare English paragon.
