[edit]Attested from ca. 1261. A cross of inherited sempice, semprice with Latin simplicem, from Proto-Indo-European *sem- (“together, one”) + *pleḱ- (“to plait, to weave”). Compare duplice, molteplice. Partial doublet of scempio.
