[edit]From Middle Dutch ijsvōgel. Equivalent to ijs (“ice”) + vogel (“bird”). There is some dispute about the origin of the name, some relate the first element to ijzer (“iron”) instead. Compare German Eisvogel, Icelandic ísfugl.
