Etymology

[edit]

From incline +‎ lift.

Noun

[edit]

incline lift (plural incline lifts)

  1. (UK, Australia, New Zealand) A cable railway on an incline; especially one which operates with one vehicle on a single track.
    Synonym: (US, Canada) inclined elevator

Usage notes

[edit]

An incline lift is sometimes contrasted with a funicular railway, which operates on two tracks (or with a passing loop), with a pair of vehicles counterbalancing each other. Informally, however, the distinction is usually contextual, with an incline lift being perceived as on a smaller scale.
