[edit]From Proto-Ugric *palɣɜ (“village”). Cognates include Northern Mansi па̄вэл (pāvèl) and Eastern Khanty пуӽәԓ (puḥəł).[1] Relationship to the Finnish verbs palvella (“to serve”), palvoa (“to worship”) has also been proposed.
