[edit]Etymology
[edit]From an old verb *gart (“to heat, to grow hot”), from the same stem as garša (“taste”) and gars (“spirit; vapor, steam”) (q.v.), all from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰer-, with an extra suffix -d.
The original meaning was presumably “heated” (e.g., cooked on a fire) > “prepared, ready” > “tasty.”[1]
