[edit]

Muttern

  1. all-case plural of Mutter (nut for a bolt)

Noun

[edit]

Muttern

  1. (archaic, dialectal, eastern Germany) strong dative/accusative singular of Mutter (mum, mother)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The dialectal inflected form Muttern is (or was) applied in the dative and accusative cases when used without an article, i.e. in the sense of “mum”: Du sollst Muttern helfen. — “You're supposed to help Mum.” This was typical of eastern German dialects, including that of Berlin, but is now widely obsolete. A remnant of this is the phrase wie bei Muttern (like Mum used to make), which is in general use.
