Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as grevenbiecht in 1437-1466. Compound of graaf (“earl”) and a second element that has variously been interpreted as Old Dutch *bihegan (“surrounded by a hedge”) (see haag) or *bicht (“turn, corner”) (compare bocht). The element graaf was added to distinguish the settlement from the older Obbicht. Compare Buchten.
See also Limburgish Beeg.
