From Proto-Germanic *hurjaz (β€œfire”) (Lehmann 1986), whence also Old Norse hyrr (β€œfire”). Ultimately from *kerh₃- (β€œto burn”), whence also Lithuanian kΓΉrti (β€œto kindle”), Latin carbo (β€œcoal”). See also Proto-West Germanic *harstijan (β€œto roast”) and Proto-West Germanic *herΓΎ (β€œhearth”).
