[edit]From Proto-Germanic *hurjaz (βfireβ) (Lehmann 1986), whence also Old Norse hyrr (βfireβ). Ultimately from *kerhβ- (βto burnβ), whence also Lithuanian kΓΉrti (βto kindleβ), Latin carbo (βcoalβ). See also Proto-West Germanic *harstijan (βto roastβ) and Proto-West Germanic *herΓΎ (βhearthβ).
