သဲ

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *say² (sand), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(s/z)a-j (earth, sand, soil). Compare Old Chinese (OC *sraːl, *sraːls, “sand”).

Proto-Tai *zwɯəjᴬ (sand), whence Thai ทราย (saai), Lao ຊາຍ (sāi) and Zhuang saiz, was probably borrowed from Proto-Sino-Tibetan or one of its descendants.
