German
editEtymology
editFrom Middle High German valden, valten, from Old High German faldan, faltan, from Proto-West Germanic *falþan. The irregular forms with -t- arose through early levelling of Grammatischer Wechsel, but remained rare in both Old and Middle High German. They probably established themselves in modern German by analogy as there are several verbs in -alten (halten, schalten, spalten, walten), but none in -alden.
Pronunciation
editVerb
editfalten (weak or mixed, third-person singular present faltet, past tense faltete, past participle gefaltet or (regional) gefalten, auxiliary haben)
- to fold
- seine Hände falten ― to fold one's hands
- mit gefalteten Händen ― with folded hands
Usage notes
edit- The normal past participle is gefaltet. The strong form gefalten is used in some regions but is now rarely seen in writing, although it is the older form (compare the Dutch cognate vouwen with past participle gevouwen).
