- From astēr (“star”), from Ancient Greek ἀστήρ (astḗr).
- Eventually from Proto-Indo-European *(h₂)stornos (“starling”), from *(h₂)stern-, whence Latin sturnus, Ancient Greek ἀστραλός (astralós), Proto-Germanic *staraz (“starling”), Old English stær.[1]
