editInherited from Ottoman Turkish صرف (ṣırf, “pure, mere, sheer (said of that which is poor or bad)”),[1][2] from Arabic صِرْف (ṣirf, “pure, absolute, mere, clear”), from صَرَفَ (ṣarafa, “to turn, to divert, to turn away, to avert”).[3]
