kylmä (cold) +‎ veri (blood) +‎ hevonen (horse), Calque of French cheval à sang froid (work horse) via Swedish kallblodshäst (work horse), according to old classification of horses in which strong and heavy workhorses were considered cold-blooded and faster and more lightly-built breeds were considered warm-blooded.
