Borrowed from German Kirchmesse or Kirmes,[1] from Middle High German kirmesse, from kirche + messe, misse, from Old High German kirihha + messe, the second element from Ecclesiastical Latin missa, from Latin mittō, from Proto-Indo-European *meyth₂-.
