editBorrowed from Greek γύφτος (gýftos, “Gipsy”), with regressive metathesis of the f, from Ancient Greek Αἰγύπτιος (Aigúptios, “Egyptian”). For the apparent, and possibly concidental, retention of the initial /e/ compare Aromanian gheghiftu.
