editInherited from Old Spanish exemplo, enxemplo, enxiemplo, borrowed from Latin exemplum, with a “native” Old Spanish value of the letter x, /ʃ/, instead of /ks/, cf. ejército. First attested in the Poem of the Cid, early 13th century. Compare Catalan exemple and Galician exemplo.
