French
editEtymology
editInherited from Middle French baiser, from Old French baisier, from Latin bāsiāre (“to kiss”).
As far as the verb is concerned, the meaning "fuck" arose via euphemism and has become the dominant sense.
Pronunciation
editNoun
editbaiser m (plural baisers)
- kiss
- 1844, Honoré de Balzac, Modeste Mignon:
- Par le baiser que me donne ma pauvre Modeste, je devine ce qui se passe en elle : si elle a reçu ce qu’elle attend, ou si elle est inquiète. Il y a bien des nuances dans les baisers, même dans ceux d’une fille innocente, […]
- By the kiss my Modeste gives me I can guess what is passing within her. I know whether she has received what she was looking for, or whether she is uneasy or expectant. There are many gradations in a kiss, even in that of an innocent young girl, […]

Usage notes
edit- The sense to kiss is rarely used in France because of the more common vulgar meaning. In Quebec it is considered a less offensive word, though the sexual sense is still predominant. However, the noun form un baiser universally means "a kiss"; "a fuck" is une baise.

1 The present participle was variable in gender and number until the 17th century (Anne Sancier-Château [1995], Une esthétique nouvelle: Honoré d'Urfé, correcteur de l'Astrée, p. 179). The French Academy would eventually declare it not to be declined in 1679. | |||||||
2 The gerund was held to be invariable by grammarians of the early 17th century, and was usable with preposition en, as in Modern French, although the preposition was not mandatory (Anne Sancier-Château [1995], op. cit., p. 180). |
