ideogram (指事) showing a person (人) bathing in warm water (now written 囗) in a container (皿) (Ji Xusheng, 2004) full of warm water; later replaced by its popular variant 温.
Alternatively, according to Xu Shen, Ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : 囚 (“prisoner”) + 皿 (“dish”) – feeding a prisoner from a dish. However, the shape in the oracle bones is different.
