Borrowed from Classical Persian نشان (nišān), from an earlier نیشان (nīšān), from Middle Persian [script needed] (nyšʾn' /⁠nīšān⁠/). Compare Assamese নিচান (nisan), Bengali নিশান (niśan), Gujarati નિશાન (niśān), Kannada ನಿಶಾನೆ (niśāne), Marathi निशाण (niśāṇ), Punjabi ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ (niśān) / نشان (niśān).
