editFrom underlying Arabic مَا هُوَ شَيْء (mā huwa šayʔ) and Arabic مَا هِيَ شَيْء (mā hiya šayʔ). The gender distinction was eventually lost, leaving miš, muš as interchangeable or regional variants.
