editUnknown. Compare كِمّ (kimm, “calyx of a flower, the envelope or spathe of a palm-tree or the like”), or perhaps even كُمّ (kumm, “sleeve”) as the body stacks up thickness in this area, and also أَكَمَة (ʔakama, “hill, mound”).

Beihefte; 8)[2] (in German), Göttingen, page 56, does not etymologize, particularly not from Egyptian, which he would know, but noting an influence of Ancient Greek κώμη (kṓmē) for some occurrence of the word in placenames in Egypt.
- Vollers, Karl (1893) “Vier Lehnwörter im Arabischen”, in Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und verwandte Gebiete[3] (in German), volume 8, pages 104–105, suspects from an unknown Egyptian, noting the influence of Ancient Greek κώμη (kṓmē) for the frequent occurrence in Egypt.
