Dr. Sylvia Sander is a Helmholtz Distinguished Professor for Marine Mineral Resources at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel. A biogeochemist, Dr. Sander specializes in the speciation of trace metals in seawater, including the open ocean, coastal areas, and hydrothermal vent systems. Her research focuses on the environmental impacts of marine mineral resource mining, the biogeochemical cycle of iron, and the effects of anthropogenic pollutants.
Previously, Dr. Sander was an associate professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand before leading the Marine Environmental Studies Laboratories of the IAEA. Sylvia has participated in numerous research cruises and actively contributes to multidisciplinary international collaborations and networks such as GESAMP, SCOR, the European Marine Board and the Ocean Decade.
